Vans Presents: A Look Back: Dogtown And Z-Boys

Vans is proud to present A Look Back: DogTown and Z-Boys, a retrospective of Stacy Peralta’s award-winning documentary that marks the film’s 20-year anniversary. Directed by Glen E. Friedman alongside filmmaker Eric Matthies, A Look Back: DogTown and Z-Boys revisits the documentary’s original cast to explore the film’s impact—not only on their lives, but on the culture of skateboarding.

Many original Z-Boys return to the screen for A Look Back, including Peralta, Peggy Oki, Wentzle Ruml, Skip Engblom, Paul Constantineau, Jim Muir and Tony Alva. A Santa Monica native and one of Vans first skate team riders, Alva’s name is forever linked to skateboarding’s origins. As a teenager in the ‘70s, he collaborated with Vans to create the brand’s first true “Off The Wall” shoe for skateboarding. More than four decades later, Alva’s story is just as powerful, immortalizing him as a revolutionary who turned Dogtown into skateboarding’s intrepid capital.

“The original film not only shed light on the foundation of modern skateboarding, it showed us the stories of those who made it happen,” Friedman said.  “Our film goes a bit deeper into what some of the participants thought of the film they stared in, and how it has since affected their and how it has since affected their lives and their brothers who have passed since its release 20 years ago.”

Friedman, who makes his directorial debut with A Look Back, is universally considered as one of the most prominent photographers of his generation, most well-known for his influential images of rebellious artists from skateboarding, punk and hip hop.  Ranging from the Beastie Boys, Run-D.M.C. and Ice-T, to Z-Boys Alva and Jay Adams, Friedman’s photographs cemented the importance of these radical subcultures at their beginnings.  His work is included in notable international collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian Institution.  Eric Matthies, who co-produced the film, is known for his broadcast, cinema and multi-media projects, and has produced globally recognized documentaries that have garnered a PGA Award, Grammy nomination, NAACP Image Award nomination, LAFF Audience Choice award, Saturn award, and Social Justice Fund nomination. A Look Back: DogTown and Z-Boys premiered globally on September 23 at the 2021 Paris Surf & Skate Film Festival.

“The Zephyr crew had an enormous impact on my peers and I, not only as skaters, but as artists and filmmakers,” Matthies said. “This project was a great opportunity to give something back to our skate community.”

The original DogTown and Z-Boys documentary rose to critical acclaim after its release in 2001, led by director and original Zephyr skateboard team member Stacy Peralta, and was co-written by Craig R. Stecyk III and co-produced by Friedman. Chronicling the rise of skateboarding in backyard pools in 1970s’ Santa Monica and Venice, the original documentary drew on a compilation of vintage images and video clips combined with present-day interviews, encapsulating how the Z-Boys ultimately created a skateboarding subculture that defined a generation and influenced those to come. The original documentary won two awards at Sundance Film Festival and an Independent Spirit Award in 2001.

Vault by Vans x Noah – Caballero VLT LX & Authentic One Piece VLT LX (Fall/Winter 2021)

IKD_5090

Vault by Vans and Noah have come together for a Fall 2021 release, offering a five-shoe collection with two takes on the Caballero VLT LX and three iterations of the Authentic One Piece VLT LX. Continuing a vintage skateboarding-focused partnership that began in 2018, Vault by Vans and Noah’s latest effort elevates two timeless Vans styles with premium tonal constructions and subtle branding.

First released in 1989, the Caballero was initially created for legendary skateboarder Steve Caballero and made iconic by Caballero’s on-board feats — plus the enterprising skaters who would modify the collar height with scissors and tape. For 2021, Vault by Vans and Noah have dressed Caballero’s signature sneaker up in spruce and black color palettes, both of which feature premium hairy suede uppers, original Caballero dragon branding on the lateral quarter, and a debossed Noah logo on the lateral heel counter. There are also printed logos on the tongue, an UltraCush insole, plus black midsoles with a red rubber stamp on the rear.

One of Vans’ original styles that date back to the Van Doren Rubber Company’s first factory in Anaheim, California, the Authentic is upgraded in this collection and matches its high-cut Caballero counterpart with spruce and black suede colorways of its own but also adds a wheat suede style into the mix. Green and black makeups alike offer black midsoles, while the wheat style flips the script with a brown gum rubber midsole. Each is completed with debossed Noah logos, tongue and UltraCush insole branding, and a red rubber heel stamp.

The Vault by Vans x Noah Caballero VLT LX and Authentic One Piece VLT LX will be released via noahny.com and Noah’s New York store at 195 Mulberry on September 16. The Caballero VLT LX is priced at $98, and the Authentic One Piece VLT LX is priced at $88. Please visit The Drop List, a calendar of Vans’ most exclusive product drops, for more information.

From the mountains to the seas, the outdoors has always been a part of Vans’ canvas. Vans MTE was made to keep you outside and exploring no matter the weather or the terrain, which is the case for Vans Surf team riders LeeAnn Curren, Pat Schmidt and Yuzuru Shinjo. Built on three key principles of moisture management, thermoregulation, and added traction to handle the elements, Vans’ enhanced MTE-2 collection will take you places you never expected.

Just as you modify your van to handle long journeys away from home, we’ve done the same to the UltraRange EXO Hi GORE-TEX MTE-2. The GORE-TEX Invisible Fit™ waterproof membrane keeps water out while letting internal moisture evaporate, so your feet stay dry. The Zonal Primaloft® insulation has millions of tiny air pockets that trap and preserve body heat to keep your feet nice and warm. An aggressive outsole tread pattern with Vans’ new All-Trac™ Cold Weather Compound grips anything from wet city streets to unpredictable trails, and the UltraCush™ dual-density midsole provides the cushioning and support needed to get you out there. Way out there.

The UltraRange EXO Hi GORE-TEX MTE-2 launches in two versatile colorways. Dachshund is a rich warm brown with a black sole and detailing and tonal GORE-TEX typography on the quarter. Bright red laces and gold tone hardware finish off the look, creating a modern take on a classic hiking boot. The marshmallow colorway offers the same performance, but with a classic sneaker look. The white upper, white sole, and white hardware look is rounded out with a black Sidestripe, black lining, and black tongue and heel loops.

Available in nutria, a neutral warm green, with black color blocking on the hood, sleeves and shoulders, and red hood strings, the Woods MTE-2 jacket is waterproof with fully taped seams, making a statement while protecting you from the elements. Rounding out the collection are the Versa Standard Q-Zip, a sleek high-neck pullover with a kangaroo pocket and drawstrings at the waist in pomegranate, the Range Relaxed Pant in black, and the MTE Cuff Beanie in nutria heather.

Vans Launches “Vans World” Skatepark Experience in the Roblox Metaverse

thumbnail_image004

Roblox, a global platform bringing millions of people together through shared experiences, and Vans®, the original action sports brand and global icon for creative expression, today announced the launch of “Vans World,” an interactive experience created by Vans on Roblox. With the launch of this exclusive new experience, Vans is the first brand to bring skateboarding, fashion, and community together in one experience, providing fans with the Vans shoe customizer to create their own unique style, and full skate shop to build their perfect board. Four Vans silhouettes will be available for fans to customize, purchase, and wear in the experience.

Vans World will serve as a persistent 3D space where fans can practice their ollies and kickflips with friends, and try-on and acquire exclusive Vans gear directly in the experience. This is the brand’s first venture into the metaverse.

Inspired by the brand’s signature locations such as House of Vans, the Vans Off The Wall Skatepark in CA, owned retail shop environments and revered skate destinations from all over the globe, Vans Vice President of Global Integrated Marketing Nick Street said: “Individual expression is deeply embedded in skate culture, and Vans has been supporting and enabling this exact type of creativity for more than 50 years. With the Vans World experience on Roblox, we are empowering creative expression in the digital world, bridging the gap between virtual and real-world fashion and sports in an accessible, inclusive way. Vans is a global icon and advocate for youth culture, and we’re thrilled to bring this authentic brand experience to the millions of Vans enthusiasts where they are — on Roblox.”

The Vans World experience, including the brand’s featured skate shoes, was created by Vans in partnership with Roblox community developers The Gang Stockholm. Roblox’s recently augmented physics layer, which is now available to all developers, helps achieve the true sensation of skating for Vans. The skating physics require vector operations and raycasting that would not have been possible without the incremental engine improvements that are a constant at Roblox. A preview of the experience can be found here.

“Vans is showcasing its commitment to empowering self-expression with Vans World,” said Christina Wootton, Vice President of Brand Partnerships for Roblox, “By leveraging cutting edge technology and partnering with the Roblox developer community to build this 3D experience, Vans is bringing brand enthusiasts together in an authentic and interactive way.”

With access to millions of people in the Roblox metaverse, brands can reach fans and attract new ones in completely immersive ways while simultaneously monetizing their brands in the metaverse. Whether pushing creative boundaries, exploring sustainable fashion, or melding the physical and virtual in an immersive, 3D runway, Roblox provides brands an unparalleled space where everyone can express themselves in a unique way.

Vault by Vans – Boot Skoot LX (8.28.21)

FA21_Vault_BootSkootLX_GroupLineup

Words via Vans:

Taking design cues and inspiration from the Vans’ Surf Boot, Vault by Vans introduces the Boot Skoot LX, a fashion-forward footwear model with the sleek look of a performance surf boot.

The Boot Skoot LX features neoprene uppers as a nod to the brands performance-driven surf boot. The hi-top is crafted with premium leather and rubber overlays for added structure, durability and elevated design detail. A unique parametric waffle sole makes it city-ready, while a combination Velcro and zip closure allows for easy wear. Available in two colorways including black with a white leather Sidestripe that draws parallels back to Vans’ owning iconic Sk8-Hi as well as a true white iteration that is finished with perforated details for breathability and a translucent waffle sole.

The new Vault by Vans assortment was visualized and self-captured by self-proclaimed sockfluencer, Gia Seo who is a Brooklyn-based creative director and Yavez Anthonio who is a photographer and director from Amsterdam who currently resides in Brooklyn, NY. Anthonio captures and creates ideas and stories through his interests that span music, fashion, culture and community.

The Vault by Vans Boot Skoot LX will be available at select Vault Dealers on August 28.

My opinion:

“So this one’s a little interesting.  Obviously, Vans has been trying to switch things up for awhile now.  Trying out completely new shapes and styles.  Aiming for a new consumer of sorts.  These are very fashion forward, even though they say they’re inspired by the Surf Boot model.  Very reminiscent of a Yeezy 750, with hints of an Air Mag.  Perhaps this shoe should’ve been given the Taka treatment, utilizing premium suedes and leathers, featuring some embroidery or perforations, while sitting atop some sort of Vibram sole?  Then again, Taka’s design inspiration may be entirely somewhere else at the moment, and we’re just stuck in the past, with old Taka stuff that was way ahead of it’s time.  Maybe all that stuff is NOW ready to be introduced to fashion.  Who knows.  These are interesting.  I like the soles.  I like the back of the shoe, more than the front.  What are your takes on it?”
