Sorry for not having much information ahead of time on these, but as with all things DEFCON, they like to keep things classified. We’ve been sharing every pic that was posted on IG this week, but we now have the official images via the DEFCON webstore. This is more of an archive post, since it’s too late to purchase a pair now, and the few skate shops that did get these, have resorted to fcfs, in-store only releases, and people (or at least their chairs) have been lined up since yesterday morning. I still think if you can’t tough out a sneaker camp out, then your chair gets lined up across the street with all the other suckers, but that’s just me. Anyways!
This pack consists of a new variation for DEFCON Vans, this time utilizing the rarely seen Gore-Tex silo. We’re not sure if they fall under the MTE line, or not, but that’s the closest identity we could give to the Gore-Tex stuff. We get two shoes for this release. There’s the Sk8-Hi Notchback Gore-Tex, as well as an Old Skool Gore-Tex, both featuring Woodland Camo poly based textiles, as well as premium Wolverine weathertight waterproof pig suede. The tongue features some custom artwork, as well as a message that says “Violent World Protection” and “138”, which although hasn’t been confirmed, but most likely is a reference to the punk band Misfits’ “We are 138” song.
I dunno man. This DEFCON stuff is always super rad, and original, and I sometimes feel bad for the Vans community, who have always supported and coveted their stuff, being that the DEFCON origins are within Vans Syndicate. The DEFCON brand caught on with special ops and military folks early on due to it’s highly authentic and attention to detail with their mil-spec aesthetic, and has now pretty much pivoted to the tactical community, and shit, if I was a brand looking for long-term sustainability and perhaps more profit, I’d be rubbing elbows with those folks as well. They’re the ones who are paying you $1,000 and up for your earlier Defcon Vans. That’s nothing compared to what they spend on their arsenals and ammo! What’s a $70 New Era or a $750 knife to them? Everyone wants to belong to something. We all want to find an identity and a community. Some are just able to buy their way into it. Not saying everyone is a culture vulture, but maybe we all are in some way or another. Maybe it’s the other way around, hehe.
At the end of the day, we still love DEFCON and think they make some of the raddest shit out there. Their attitude and designs are legit, and speak to folks like us, who idolized all things military growing up, and who want to display their American pride, without it all looking like something you picked up at the Wal-Mart. SR-71’s, Rambo graphics, and Eagles clutching lightning bolts is more our speed.
