Vans Vault x Blends x Born Free – OG Old Skool LX (UTP Review!)

IMG_1625small

This past weekend was Born Free 8, Southern California’s premier motorcycle builder’s show, where Blends released their latest classic Vans shoe, in collaboration with Born Free.  The OG Old Skool LX that they went with, is simple, and designed for the classic Vans enthusiast, which includes many folks in the vintage bike builder crowd.  To most of these builders and fans, they could care less about rare and limited shoes, with fancy materials, colorways, but they do like classic, time-tested, designs like the classic black & white Old Skool.  Blends and Born Free wanted to create something specific to this crowd, and the customization was kept to a bare minimum.  Hardly noticeable, are the slim red and blue pieces of leather protruding from the top and bottom of the classic white jazz stripe, giving off a truly Americana aesthetic.  The only other customized part of the shoe, would be the translucent sole, with checkerboard bottom, and custom branded footbeds, both which are hardly seen, but are there to let you know these aren’t your typical pair of Vans Old Skools.  Materials are the same as you’d find on any pair of Vault OG shoe, including the pigskin lining.  These shoes were a must for me and a few others, thus the reason about 9 of us got to Born Free 8 early in the morning, about 3 hours before the gates opened, just to secure pairs for ourselves and friends from all over the globe.  It was a surprisingly easy release, but online pairs sold out instantly.  I hope you enjoy a few personal unfiltered pics I took, and be on the lookout for any pairs that go up for sale!

Vans Vault x Club 75 – OG Sk8-Hi & OG Era LX (6.24.16)

HD-CLUB-75-VANS∏DimitriCoste014

Vans Vault has teamed up with Parisian brand Club 75 (Busy P., Michael Dupouy, and So-Me), to create this highly limited collaboration, featuring an OG Sk8-Hi LX, and OG Era LX.  The design inspiration comes from local Parisian life, thus the graphic “Locals Only” displayed across each toe of the OG Era LX.  Both shoes feature an all-over print of miniature illustrations of what Paris has to offer.  From “beautiful girls” to “meat on a spit”.  Hey, whatever floats your boat!  The shoes are definitely unique, and to the first 30 customers, a skateboard deck with the coinciding graphics will be given out.  Unfortunately, these are an in-shop exclusive, at 32 rue Yves Toudic, in the 10th arrondissement.  Good luck!

Vans Vault x Bows And Arrows – Runner LX (6.25.16) #bowsandarrowsberkeley @bows_and_arrows

1

Bows And Arrows have released full pictures of their Vault by Vans Runner LX version, a wild and less serious design covered completely in white pony hair.   The luxury details are still there with the mix of pony hair and soft premium leather, but I’m a little sad that they didn’t produce smaller sizes for the ladies, as this Runner could easily be unisex.  Bows And Arrows has already created a link to the webpage that will be selling remaining pairs of the shoe, which can be found here.

Here’s what Bows And Arrows has to say about their shoe:

“We’re excited to introduce a project we worked on with our friends over at Vans Vault. Considering Vans isn’t exactly known for having an imprint on the running shoe world we thought this was a cool opportunity to have some fun and bring a light hearted perspective to a market that’s not only completely over saturated, but a bit too serious sometimes.

The Vans Vault X Bows and Arrows Runner (White/Pony) is built on a cushy midsole with a toothed outsole. Featuring a tonal and very shaggy synthetic pony hair upper, soft leather liner and co-branded footbed.”

Releasing first come first served in-store only, Saturday 6/25. Remaining stock offered online at noon pst on Sunday 6/25.

Vans Vault x Blends – Runner LX (6.25.16) #blends @blendsus #blendsvans

17

Blends just released the pics of their Vault by Vans Runner collab, and I must say I am really digging these.  Blends was one of four shops picked to work with Vault on this retro-esque model, joining Sole Classics, Bows & Arrows, and we heard the fourth shop is either Bodega or Barney’s, but neither have hinted at a shoe.  To most newcomers, the Runner may be a completely new, and possibly confusing silhouette, but if you know your Vans history, then you know these have their roots planted in the Made In USA Serio runners of the early 80’s.  Google ’em!  Is this a good decision for Vans?  Do you think they should keep making them, or keep them limited to preserve their desirability?  Either way, this highly limited Vault by Vans collection might just be one to grab all four pairs of.

Following excerpt from Blends:
“Southern California-based boutique, Blends, teams up with Vans Vault for a special take on Vans’ Runner model. Blends dresses the model in a supple premium leather in an all-over quilted design with tonal accents of supple leather on the Jazz-Stripe, Heel, and Socklining as well as waxed flat cotton laces. Additional details include a Black rubber outsole accented with a white mid-sole. Vans utilizes its proprietary ULTRACUSH™ cushion technology for optimized support for every stride”.

The Blends x Vans Vault Quilted Leather Runner will be available this Saturday, 25th, at Blends Costa Mesa and Blendsus.com.

Vans – U.S. Open of Surf 2016 Collection

vans-2016-us-open-of-surfing-sneakers-1

Words via Strictly Waffles

“Just ahead of next month’s event in Huntington Beach, CA, Vans has released the annual US Open of Surfing collection. Consisting of 5 men’s styles, the collection features one Slip On, two Authentics, an Old Skool, and Sk8 Hi.

Three models in the collection feature a photographically printed sunset and palm tree graphic. The Sk8 Hi opts for black canvas vamp and heel counters while the printed canvas drapes the entire upper of the Slip On and Authentic.

The other two pairs in this set make use of the classic checkerboard pattern which the brand is so well known for. Both heel counters of the Authentic and the Old Skool are wrapped in the black and white check canvas while the vamps are dressed in red suede for the Authentic and blue on the Old Skool. Additionally, the US Open of Surfing logo is printed along both sides of the Authentic’s midsole.

The Vans US Open of Surfing 2016 Footwear Collection is available now from Vans.com. If you are in Huntington Beach and would rather pick them up in person, head to the event from July 23 – 31st. ”

Vans Vault x Sole Classics – OG Runner LX “Kitchi” (6.25.16) #soleclassics @soleclassics

DSC00349

Sole Classics teased us the other day via Instagram, with their next Vault by Vans collaboration, featuring a water colors portrait of a bear, titled “The Story of Kitchi”.  Until today, there hasn’t been a single leaked photo of this release, and perhaps for good reason.  The newly retro’d Runner model is a bold direction for Vans, and what better way to kick things off, than with a few collaborative designs.  Kitchi is another one of those local folklore stories, of a native boy who used the Ohio river to save himself, and his village.  Sole Classics does a great job of representing for their local area, and constantly sharing who they are.  Not sure about y’all, but I feel like I get much more than just a shoe whenever I buy one of SC’s collabs.  If anyone walks up to you and says “What are those?”, you’ll have the opportunity to sit them down for a few minutes and tell them a nice story.  Sole Classics brings the people together!

Here’s what they have to say about their latest shoe:

“The Sole Classics OG Runner collaboration with Vans is a perfect blend between two worlds. The runner is outfitted primarily in a rich leather and neoprene, two materials that are not normally seen together. The goal being to pay homage to the premium qualities that make up Vans’ Vault line, but also be unique enough together to push the brand’s “Off The Wall” heritage. The pair comes with minor details such as 3M sidestripe lining and a set of alternate 3M laces, logo hits on the heel and a gold “X” to commemorate Sole Classics’ 10th year in business. The colorway of the shoe represents a bit of local folklore as it draws inspiration from a native tail of a boy who used the Ohio river to save himself, and his village. All together, with the new silhouette you have the makings of an instant classic”.

Vans Vault x Blends x Born Free – OG Old Skool LX (6.25.16)

30
Southern California-based boutique Blends, and Vans Vault partner up with classic/custom motorcycle show Born Free to recreate the classic Vans model, the Old Skool. For those not familiar with the classic/custom motorcycle scene Born Free is a yearly gathering of builders and bike enthusiasts in the Orange County region of Southern California where enthusiasts and builders from all over the globe meet to showcase their rare builds and findings (more information can be found at www.bornfreeshow.com).  Here and there Blends has hinted their love and involvement in the classic motorcycle scene with their Max Schaaf release party at their Santa Ana location where hundreds of builders participated in motorcycle shop-talk. A Couple years back Blends anchored the campaign of their ’Bone Jazz Stripe’ Old Skool Zip LX release with Grant Peterson, co-founder of Born Free.
Blends takes focus on subtleties once again with this shoe, maintaining a more ‘lifestyle appropriate’ Old Skool design. The focus on the design was to create a shoe that made sense for everyday use of motorcycle builders/riders and nothing else. The brand maintains the canvas and suede makeup of the traditional Old Skool but adding an ‘American’ flare on the Jazz-Stripe with waxed flat cotton shoestrings and the iconic Vans checkerboard pattern detail underlying a translucent waffle outsole. Cross-branding details are noticeable on the shoe’s sole insert.
The Blends designed Vans Vault x Born Free OG Old Skool LX can be purchased this weekend at Born Free at the Blends vendor booth, and then on Blendsus.com Monday June 27th, after the show is over. For more details/information head over to Blends’ webstore to view more.
