Hot Rod x Under The Palms x The Authentic Era – Event Recap Pics (via @solscience)

HRLA8

This past weekend, we teamed up with Hot Rod to put on a pop-up shop for The Authentic Era, complete with an in-store live custom printing on vintage Made In USA Vans tees.  The event was a success, and people were really liking the hats and tees that we had made for the event.  We saw a bunch of familiar faces, as well as some new ones.  A few longtime members of Under The Palms and Strictly Waffles finally were able to come out and show support, which is always nice.  We had an awesome time, and we hope to do this again.  I want to thank Bernard, and the entire Hot Rod crew for really going above and beyond for little ‘ol us.  From the designs, to the merch production, to the man hours put in to this.  I appreciate all of it, and am humbled by it.  I’m definitely not worthy.  I also want to thank Kent and Daichi from solscience for taking these cool pics of the event.  I get caught up visiting with people, that I forget to take photos.  Enjoy these pics after the jump!

Hot Rod x Under The Palms x The Authentic Era – Capsule Collection (Available Now!) @hotrodla #hrla

BLACK_UTP

We’re proud to announce this special limited-run collaboration with Los Angeles’ Hot Rod.  What started out as a pop-up shop event for our The Authentic Era project, has turned into something much more fun and exciting.  We’ve come up with a few bad ass graphics for the collection, which are available in 3 colorways of hats, and tees.  But wait, there’s more!  If you come to the event tonight from 5-10 PM, we’ll be doing an in-store exclusive t-shirt printing, utilizing some vintage Made In USA Vans tees from the early 90’s.  Once they’re gone…they’re gone.  Your chances of owning something cool like this will probably never happen again.  Support this cool project, and head on over to L.A.’s west side Vault by Vans dealer, Hot Rod, at 2253 Westwood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90064.

For supporters who can’t make the event, you can still cop the hats and tees (coming soon) over on Hot Rod’s webstore!

Vans Classics – Blocked Pack (Available Now!)

SP17_Classics_OldSkool_Blocked_Collection_Elevated

With the coming of spring, Vans updates two of its core styles by way of the Blocked Pack, that re-imagines color-block design. The Authentic DX and Old Skool DX feature cotton twill canvas, UltraCush® HD insoles for added comfort and rich color-blocking to create an assortment of footwear for men and women.

Vans designers juxtapose classic white canvas against bright racing red, dark slate gray, classic black, deep coral and faint lavender across the Authentic DX and Old Skool DX. The rich color tones on the Authentic DX begin at the vamp and transition to the heel friction and foxing. The color-block detail on the Old Skool DX is carried over the vamp, quarter panel and leather Sidestripe with a minimal appearance on the heel friction and foxing. The sophisticated color combinations result in an optical effect that gives color-blocking a clean look with a contemporary twist.

Showcasing how Vans are not just one thing, the Classics Blocked Pack remains true to Vans iconic design across heritage footwear silhouettes. The pack retails for $60 – $65 USD and is available to shop in Vans retail stores and online at Vans.com now.

Vans Partners with Chef Paul Kahan to Release Limited Footwear Capsule and Raise Awareness for Chicago Charity, Pilot Light

Vans_PAULKAHAN2

Vans continues to foster the creative culture of the food industry by partnering with celebrated Chef Paul Kahan, and One Off Hospitality Group to showcase a footwear capsule, in conjunction with four of their Chicago restaurants: Publican Quality Meats, avec, Blackbird and Dove’s Luncheonette. A special event to highlight Kahan’s culinary creativity is set for April 1 at House of Vans Chicago and will raise money toward Pilot Light, a non-profit organization of which Kahan is a founding member.

Kahan’s accolades are many and Vans is proud to partner with the chef on a four-piece capsule that includes premium versions of Vans’ Classic silhouettes. The Old Skool, Sk8-Hi and Classic Slip-On highlight colorways that are drawn directly from each restaurant’s aesthetic. A grey Old Skool speaks to the effortless Mediterranean style avec employs, while the Sk8-Hi highlights the diner setting of Dove’s Luncheonette, blending a retro and modern design to compliment the restaurant. The Classic Slip-On takes on design features from Publican Quality Meats and Blackbird with subtle pops of color that coordinate with their iconic logos. Each style features a contoured drop-in Vans UltraCush™ footbed for all-day maximum comfort, Vansguard™ canvas uppers to repel water, as well as dirt and slip-resistant, vulcanized lugged outsoles.

“I’ve worn Vans my whole life, and feel that skaters, cooks and musicians share a lot of culture and creativity. I’m excited to be part of that,” Kahan said. Despite accolades and adoration, Kahan’s biggest accomplishment remains his work as a mentor for young chefs. He works to foster empowerment, providing the resources necessary to grow, both as a chef and person.

To highlight the importance of food education, House of Vans Chicago will host an event, complete with a raffle, to raise awareness toward Pilot Light. Pilot Light, a nonprofit organization that helps children make healthier choices by connecting the lessons they learn in their classrooms to the foods they eat on their lunch trays, at home and in their communities, directly works with local Chicago schools and provides an interactive way for children to learn about the importance of nutrition. The funds from the raffle will be used to support Pilot Light programming at local school, Mitchell Elementary, from now throughout 2018. In addition, House of Vans Chicago will host a performance by post-punk band, Preoccupations, which is open to public with RSVP at houseofvans.com.

“Vans’ ethos is driven by creative expression and our brand has been lucky enough to partner with a wide range of creative individuals that bring the ‘Off The Wall’ meaning to life,” said Doug Palladini, Vans Global Brand President. “Chefs like Paul exemplify creativity and Vans is honored to support his work in educating our youth that creative avenues exist through all professions.”

Chef Paul Kahan is passionately seasonal, unconventionally creative and dedicated to the inspiration of classical cuisine. Kahan has received international acclaim for Blackbird, avec, The Publican, Big Star, Publican Quality Meats, Nico Osteria, Dove’s Luncheonette, Publican Quality Bread, Publican Tavern O’Hare and most recently, Publican Anker. Kahan has earned the praise of many who claim him to be one of America’s most influential working chefs.

Vans Vault x OTH – “Deli Edition” Mid Skool ’77 LX (UTP Review!)

OTHMidSkoolLX18

It’s been a little while since we’ve seen a collab from Canada’s OFFTHEHOOK in Montreal, Quebec, but their latest offering has got them positioned right back at the front of the pack.  At first, we have to admit we weren’t too sure of what to expect from a shoe who’s inspiration came from a deli sandwich, but it’s all about the execution and final product, right?  OTH has a very high batting average when it comes to their Vault collabs, and this Mid Skool ’77 LX is another home run hit.  Who doesn’t love a burgundy premium leather shoe?  Well, add to that, a distresses leather that slightly resembles the smoked beef of said deli sandwich, and some contrasting yellow laces representing the mustard, and now you have a design that is instantly recognizable.  The extra “relish” mint green waxed laces, and “mayo” off white waxed laces that come in sauce cups are another nice touch, and I laced up one shoe in the white lace, so you could see what that looks like.  I prefer the yellow, otherwise the shoe would look similar to something that you may see in a standard Vault line, or DX line.  That same yellow color is spread across the bottom waffle soles as well.  Footbeds feature a pickle, which is fun, and the lining is a light brown premium leather as well.  The promotion on this release is super well thought out, and for the release party, each pair was delivered in a brown paper bag, each shoe being wrapped in red/white checkered paper, and a custom Vans order receipt was stapled to the bag, complete with some juice stains!  I received my pair in the same style, and I love it.  Thanks for going above and beyond and letting me experience that, from across North America!  We also received a special pair of 40s & Shorties pickle socks, which was another awesome touch!  I want to congratulate OTH on another great release, especially Graeme who contacted me a little while ago to let me know that something was releasing soon, that he personally had a hand in designing, before he left OTH.  Great job man!  I hope my review helps you decide if you need to cop these, because they’re surely worth it.  Thanks again to OTH for the early hook-up, and may these sell out just as fast as your other releases!

Vans Anaheim Factory Edition Series

SP17_Classics_Anaheim_Collection_Elevated

Vans pays tribute to over 50 years of “Off The Wall” design history by releasing the Anaheim Factory pack, a collection of Classic silhouettes that draws inspiration from the original footwear produced in Anaheim, Calif. When Vans opened for business in 1966, a 400 sq. ft. retail store was connected to the front of the production factory, which sold a handful of simple canvas footwear. Today, Vans calls upon those early styling cues to release a modern update to Vans Icons as a part of the ongoing Classics “Not Just One Thing” campaign.

Every design element within the Anaheim Factory pack could be dated back to the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Style numbers are used to signify the original design mold of three footwear models – the Authentic 44, Old Skool 36 and Sk8-Hi 38. Each style utilizes a marshmallow sidewall with a higher profile and is treated with a slight sheen that was present after going through Vans’ early vulcanization process. The entire offering features a heavy 10-oz. canvas and the Sidestripe models showcase a suede toe cap, heel counter and eyestay. All colorways including the racing red, mineral green and light grey could have been found when you visited the original Anaheim Factory store. Vans has equipped each silhouette with a premium UltraCush footliner so you can enjoy a modernized take on one of Vans Classic Icon silhouettes.

The Anaheim Factory pack ranges from $75- $85 USD and is available to shop globally in Vans retail stores and online at Vans.com/Classics now.

solscience® x Under The Palms presents: “Tropicali” ANTIDŌT™ Footwear Freshener (Available Now!)

MoonTropicali

We’ve been working in the lab with solscience for awhile now, on a custom ANTIDOT Footwear Freshener fragrance created just for us, and we’re proud to release to you all, Tropicali.  The idea was simply to develop a fragrance that represents the California lifestyle that we know and love. Think fun in the sun, weekend barbecues, cruising in your ride, and hanging with friends.  Straight West Coastin’ with the Southern California vibes!  We think you’ll be amazed at how good the fragrance smells, and you might just end up using it in your car, your room, work place, bathroom lol, etc.  Hey, it’s up to you.  Give this product a try, and let us know what you think.  We’ve already got a lot of great feedback from it, and people are really impressed at how good the fragrance is.  These guys really are chemists!  To go along with the custom labeled ANTIDOT x Under The Palms bottle, we’ve included a custom sticker as well, sporting our collaborative logo, and to launch the product, I got together with my original DJ brothers Rewind and Roial 1, who I started out spinning with back in high school a long long time ago, and we made a West Coast mixtape full of them classic bangers, as well as a few new ones, that you can stream over on my mixcloud account.  Listen for the custom “solscience, ANTIDOT, Under The Palms” drops throughout the mix.  There’s also an article that solscience wrote up about me, if you care for that sorta’ thing.  I talk about how and why I got into sneakers.  When and why I shifted to Vans.  Other ramblings and opinions that you may care or not care to know.  You know, the usual.  You can check that out from the links below as well.  Support us, and my friends Kent and Daichi, as we introduce you to something new that you never knew you needed until now!

Vans Vault x OTH – Deli Edition Mid Skool ’77 LX (3.18.17)

Beauty 4 copy

Words via OTH:

“Off The Hook and Vans are proud to announce the upcoming release of the DELI
EDITION MID SKOOL ‘77 LX . Not only is this shoe inspired by a truly iconic aspect of Montreal, it speaks to
the multicultural and diverse nature of the city that we call home.

Smoked Meat in Montreal

When tourists come to Montreal they’ll seek out a Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich, and with good reason. The
Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich was brought to North America by the Jewish immigrant community in the
early 1900s. It soon spread out from Montreal and made its way south of the border, gaining notoriety along the
way, but has remained emblematic of the city’s cuisine and diverse makeup. The fact that the iconic dish has
become intertwined with Montreal’s identity, after being brought here by immigrants, speaks to the city’s
multiculturalism and its history as a place where immigrants from around the world have come to settle.

The Deli Edition

The Vault by Vans x OTH Deli Edition Mid Skool ‘77 LX was dreamt up as an homage to the Montreal smoked
meat sandwich (which we’re going to go ahead and call the best sandwich of all time). The shoe features a lightly
distressed, rich burgundy leather upper; a premium leather heel counter and toe box in a lighter shade of
burgundy; and, of course, the classic Mid Skool ‘77 back window that showcases Vans branding. The distressed
leather, and different shades of burgundy, harken back to the heart of a smoked meat sandwich – and the classic
“lean, medium, or medium fat” conundrum – with a rye bread-inspired brown leather jazz stripe and gum tab at
the back of the outsole delicately holding everything together.

We’d have been remiss to offer up a Deli Edition without mustard, so each shoe comes outfitted with Vans’ iconic
waffle sole in a deep mustard yellow. Each pair comes with three sets of laces: a mustard yellow, a mayonnaise
white, and a coleslaw green. Finally, the shoes feature limited edition pickle footbeds with Vans OTH branding.

The Vault by Vans x OTH Deli Edition Mid Skool ‘77 LX will be available on Saturday, March 18th at the Vans
OTH store at 11AM, and online as of 12PM.
