Vans Surf – Surf Boot Mid & Hi (Available Now!)

DISCLOSURE: This post may contain affiliate links, meaning when you click the links and make a purchase, we receive a commission.

We hardly ever get to share info about Vans’ Surf line, but I thought these are pretty cool.  Inspired by skateboarding, the Surf Boot Mid & Surf Boot Hi takes the brand’s iconic checkerboard pattern and repurposes it for the water rather than the skate park. Vans’ new surf booties, which provide better grip and board feel, come in two variations: mid- and high-top. The mid-top is for warm water conditions, while the high-top is for cold water and features a rubber-dipped upper to keep water out and your feet warm.

Both styles feature Vans’ iconic Sidestripe and checkerboard detailing. And the skateboarding inspiration doesn’t stop at the design details. Vans has taken its original waffle grip and board feel and reimagined those features for surfing.

Pricing is set at $65 for the Mid, and $80 for the Hi.  Both are now available online by clicking the pic above, or HERE.

Vans Skate x Pass~Port – Sid Pro (4.20.19)

vans_passport-sid_overview

Words via Silo:

“In skateboarding, community is everything. Anywhere in the world, if you skate, you’ll find a home among the local scene. Australia’s Pass~Port has built a worldwide following by fostering skaters and creatives alike, pushing boundaries with rich and honest visuals backed by a feeling that what matters most is that you do whatever you do with soul. In honor of this spirit, Vans Pro Skate unveils a limited-edition Pass~Port Sid Pro and matching Bomber Jacket to mark the second collaboration between the two authentic skateboarding brands.

Defined by an embossed allover brick pattern, Pass~Port’s new Vans collection is inspired by local spot “Fitzy Plaza” located in Edinsburgh Gardens, North Fitzroy. The burnt red brick community building and the lush green footy fields surrounding the spot were a direct influence on the shoes and jacket design. With custom tongue labels and embroidered Pass~Port logos on the instep and heel, the Sid Pro—a reintroduced 90s Vans style almost exclusively utilized as a silhouette for collaboration—references the digger man motif often seen in Pass~Port graphics and the brand’s retro visuals inspired by skate videos of decades past.

Silo, as well as a few Vans Skate retailers will be releasing these on 4/20 for $90.

Vault By Vans x Ralph Steadman – Collection (4.27.19)

https-_hypebeast.com_image_2019_04_ralph-steadman-vans-collaboration-collection-0-1

This spring, legendary artist Ralph Steadman and premium goods purveyor Vault by Vans, partner on an imperative mission to raise awareness about animal endangerment and extinction. Steadman, the renowned British illustrator of social caricatures, cartoons and picture books, lends his work to the canvases of Vans’ Sk8-Hi and Classic Slip-On, to showcase his notoriously splattered, hallucinogenic illustrations.

Featuring illustrations from “Gonzovationists” Ralph Steadman and Ceri Levy’s published books, Extinct Boids, Nextinction, and Critical Critters, Vault by Vans presents an artful and expressive way of bringing awareness and attention to threatened species. Writer-filmmaker, Ceri Levy articulates the Gonzovationist approach simply: “We’ve always maintained that you’ve got to make people laugh in order to engage them. If we just tell people, ‘you’re all dreadful bastards, you’ve screwed it all up, and now look what’s going to happen,’ people go, ‘yeah, whatever.’ But if you make them laugh, you’ve got a chance.” Thought up by the duo themselves, “Gonzovationist” defines alternative conservation through the act of gonzovating—the protection, preservation, management, or restoration of wildlife and of natural resources to include forests, earth and water.

As part of the launch of the collection, Vans has partnered with WildAid, an organization that works to reduce global consumption of wildlife products and to increase local support for conservation efforts. In addition to encouraging contributions through a donation-inspired exhibition, Vans will donate $10,000 towards WildAid to provide crucial support to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes, deliver comprehensive marine protection and reduce our collective environmental impact. “We hope these vivid depictions of the world’s most imperiled species can help inspire the change we need to save them,” said WildAid CEO Peter Knights. To celebrate the Vault by Vans x Ralph Steadman collection, Vans will feature Steadman’s artwork alongside donation installations at the new Vault by Vans Pop-Up store, located on the Lower East Side in New York City.

Coining himself as a “savage satirist”, Ralph Steadman delivers meaningful visual enlightenment and informative illustrations in this Vault by Vans collaboration using a playful approach to a sensitive cause. With his artwork reflected on beloved Vans canvases across footwear, apparel and skate decks, a merging of two explosive identities unite for a significant cause.

With every footwear, apparel and deck iteration standing for something beyond themselves, each version tells a deeper story surrounding an endangered species. The collection consists of eight footwear styles, five apparel pieces and four unique decks. Keeping environmental protection in mind, the products were designed with the most sustainable materials available including organic cotton, FSC certified wood skateboard decks and packaging made from 100% recycled content.

The Vault by Vans x Ralph Steadman collection will be available on April 27, 2019. To learn more about the Vault by Vans x Ralph Steadman collection, please visit vans.com/vault.

Introducing Under The Palms’ new mascot Billy Bulldog

Fostering a world-wide sneaker community has brought many opportunities to us here at Under The Palms.  We’ve recognized that our best asset is knowledge, bridging communities, and preserving history and culture, at least in our own world of Vans sneakers.  For our official mascot, and hopefully the first of many characters to join the UTP family, we wanted to do it right.  We wanted to share with you, one of our most influential graphic artists, who is probably the most significant artist of the 80’s, especially in the surf and skate world. We’re talking about none other than Steve Nazar, who you might recognize from the famed T&C Surf Designs tees, and more recently Thrilla Krew.  His infamous characters are iconic, and are instantly recognizable, and I’ve always loved Thrilla The Gorilla.  I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have our own character that we could call our own.  One that you could say has been accepted into Da Boys. It was tough deciding on what type of character I wanted to go with.  We needed an alpha character, just like Thrilla, large and in charge.  After thinking it over, I thought an English Bulldog’s strength, attitude and loyalty best represented us, and channels our youthful vibes, as my high school mascot was a bulldog.  When I commissioned Steve to create the type of character I wanted, I had no idea how dope it was going to look in real form, but as soon as I first laid eyes on him, I knew he was special, and Steve delivered exactly what I had envisioned.  We had our very own icon, right out of our youth, to represent and lead our lifestyle and community.  Let me remind you, I’ve been sitting on this since early 2015, before Steve re-introduced Da Boys to a new generation through his brand Thrilla Krew, just in case you have any doubts about our authenticity with this.  In fact, I originally asked if Steve could make us a Thrilla graphic for Under The Palms, and he said he had something planned in the future for Da Boys, and couldn’t let us use him, but that was the best thing that ever happened to us.  We got our very own character that we could call our own!  Oh, and while he was at it, I had him throw in our very own yin yang logo, and iconic lettering for us, so that’s also very dope!  I wanted his debut to be special and grandiose, but the more I’ve waited, the more I feel like I’ve just wasted time and talent.  Who knows what he will become, but I figured I’d just introduce him to you all, and then we will just see where he takes us!  With all that being said, we introduce to you, our own badass leader, Billy Bulldog.

Vault By Vans x COMME des GARÇONS – Authentic LX (April 2019)

https-_hypebeast.com_image_2019_04_comme-des-garcons-cdg-vans-release-information-03

COMME des GARÇONS has teamed up with Vans Vault again, to recreate their previous all-over print Authentic, but this time in an all-black version.  Constructed entirely in 10 oz. canvas, and sitting on top of a black vulcanized sole.  This Authentic isn’t the OG make-up, as it’s missing the heel strip panel, but it’s a Vault LX nonetheless.  They’re exclusive to Dover Street Market, and while visiting Dover Street Market Los Angeles a few weeks back, I saw these on the shelf, so it’s confirmed that they are out now.

SP19_Classics_DavidBowie_Lineup

DISCLOSURE: This post may contain affiliate links, meaning when you click the links and make a purchase, we receive a commission.

This spring, Vans commemorates the life and legacy of David Bowie with a collection of unisex footwear and apparel for adults and toddlers. Drawing inspiration from some of Bowie’s most influential works and many colorful personas, this collaboration celebrates a joint force between Vans and “the man who fell to earth”—two entities who for decades have championed the different and the strange, leaving a lasting impression on generations. The Vans and David Bowie collection lands in select Vans retail stores and online April 5.

David Bowie is a truly immortal artist whose body of work revolutionized sound and vision, leaving a legacy of innovation and reinvention that will live on forever. For this collection, Vans designers were inspired by iconic Bowie imagery throughout his career from 1969’s Space Oddity all the way to his final album, 2016’s ★.

The Vans x David Bowie collection kicks off with a five-piece apparel and accessories capsule, with each style designed to represent remarkable moments from the Aladdin Sane and Ziggy Stardust album covers to the Serious Moonlight tour.

  • The footwear collection begins by dedicating Vans Classic Era to Bowie’s first hit single “Space Oddity” from 1969. Vans’ first skate shoe showcases varying hues of blue and green and cylindrical shapes that matches back to the album art cover. The Era is finished with a black sole that is accented with the album name on the medial and tonal design details on the lateral sides.
  • The Slip-On 47 V has been reimagined to include fuzzy checkerboard uppers reminiscent of the coat seen on Bowie on the Hunky Dory album artwork. The slip-on is accented by yellow suede uppers and is finished with the artist’s moniker on the pull-tab.
  • The Sk8-Hi Platform 2.0 pays tribute to Bowie’s glam rock alter-ego Ziggy Stardust. The platform style is decked out in red patent leather and features an embossed Bowie lettering and black platform sole. Paying homage to Bowie’s inclusive nature, Vans will be offering the Sk8-Hi Platform style in an extended size range for men and women.
  • Vans’ Old Skool is dedicated to David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane album and includes pearlescent pebbled leather uppers accented by the iconic red and blue lightning bolt and finished with Vans’ Sidestripe. The two renowned motifs merge on the Sk8-Hi model which has checkerboard printed sidewall and includes the Bowie lightning bolt logo lock-up overlaid across the ubiquitous print and Sidestripe.
  • David Bowie’s last album, ★ is highlighted across Vans Classic Slip-On model. Using a combination of canvas and suede uppers, the vamp includes a vinyl star while the tonal black outsole includes an embossed star. The Slip-On is completed with a galaxy of stars on the footbed as a tribute to Bowie’s legacy.
  • Even the youngest of David Bowie fans can pay homage to the prolific artist with a two-pair collection of footwear including the Sk8-Hi Zip and Old Skool V models that match back to the Bowie and Aladdin Sane adult styles.

The Vans x David Bowie collection is available for a limited time in select Vans retail stores and online beginning April 5.  Click on pic above on release date to purchase!

Lizzie’s vibrant aesthetic and love for skateboarding has inspired a collection made for women to feel comfortable and boldly push forward.

Featured in premium canvas and suede uppers, Lizzie Amanto’s endorsed colorway of the Vans Slip-On Pro and Sk8-Hi Pro are enhanced with innovative performance features that include supportive UltraCush HD sockliners for resilient cushioning and advanced comfort, and Duracap-reinforced underlays in high abrasion areas for premium durability and consistent fit. Fabricated with an added rubber ollie pad for increased protection, Lizzie’s endorsed colorways also reveal reflective checkerboard detailing on the foxing stripe that binds the shoe together.

While traveling in Asia, Lizzie became enamored with the traditional Japanese “Maneki-neko” cat that symbolizes good luck and knew it had to be incorporated in this collection. Both the Vans Slip-On Pro and Vans Sk8-Hi Pro have good fortune detailed in the sole and Lizzie’s own personal initials embroidered onto the heel counter. The Sk8-Hi Pro continues to bring her aesthetic to life with the top eyelet shaped as a flower, custom made for Lizzie.

Designed with movement in mind, Lizzie’s apparel collection is both stylish and functional. The Lizzie Body Suit provides a breathable cotton elastane material covered with an all-over checkered print that stays tucked in for optimal skate activity. The Lizzie Raglan Hoodie is the perfect pullover for warming up before a skate session. With a relaxed fit that keeps comfy looking fresh, the striking lavender-toned colorway and Lizzie’s embroidered signature makes this an essential to the outfit. Finally, the Lizzie Skate Pack keeps all the travel essentials tucked away in a backpack perfect for traveling with two main compartments ideal for tech storage, skate gear and other knick knacks.

Part of the Vans global family since 2014, Lizzie Armanto has paved her own path, boasting several contest wins and acclaimed video parts along the way.
