Vans and BJ Betts have joined forces for the first-time to deliver a new range of “Made for the Makers” product. The legendary American tattoo artist and graphic designer combined his distinct aesthetic with three classic silhouettes from the California footwear label to create an assortment of functional, military-inspired styles.

Over the past two plus decades, BJ Betts has been at the forefront of the ever-changing tattoo world. Blending traditional tattoo elements with gothic imagery and Japanese folklore, Betts’ style is hallmarked by an emphasis on unique fonts and precise lettering. Having released a series of industry standard guides on lettering, Betts’ relevance to graphic design and tattoo art is undisputed. Today he works primarily out of his Kennett Square, Pennsylvania studio State Street Tattoo.

Tapping into the ornate designs that he’s become known for, Betts worked with Vans to update a trio of Classics—the Old Skool, Authentic and Slip-On, featuring original camouflage patterns in muted military-inspired colors. Each of the styles feature mixed suede and canvas uppers in liquid and dirt repellant Vansguard® coating with camouflage UltraCush sockliners and Vans’ “Made for the Makers” benefits including slip-resistant, vulcanized lugged outsoles, maximizing comfort without sacrificing personal style. Betts’ rendition features the addition of pull tabs at the heel, with digits representing his birth year (’71), alongside the original Vans style numbers.

‘’I wanted to make something functional. Being an artist and working long hours, more times than not I end up going out and having dinner later in the evening and going to meet up with my family and friends directly from work.

I wanted to have a collection that could be worn easily and comfortably while working, with the stain resistant qualities that allow me to head out for a nice dinner looking presentable with a simple wipe down of my shoes. The shoes are generally the first thing that is noticed, am I wrong?

The camo pattern and its colors are inspired by my military service, and my Grandfather’s service as well, who was one of the best men that ever walked this earth, and who this whole project is dedicated to. ‘’ – BJ Betts

The Vans x BJ Betts collection will be released September 10, 2020 on vans.com, at select Vans retail doors and Philadelphia retailer Lapstone and Hammer.

Words via Vans:

“For the latest drop of the season, Vans designers offer two new remastered versions of the Era and the Old Skool Cap. Inspired by the Vans ‘Inside Out’ assortment which debuted last season, the Chenille pack uses unique techniques and exposed materials  – incorporating DIY, deconstruction, and 3D design details that tie together the Classic footwear offering.

The Chenille pack kicks off with the Era, offering a modern take on the Classic silhouette. The Era features an off-white sole and canvas upper, with complimenting eyelets, stitching, laces, and interior, creating a monochromatic feel to the base of the shoe. Vans designers have elevated the brands iconic checkerboard pattern using flocked snow-white chenille material across the front and side panels for a 3D checkerboard effect. The Era is finished with a light pink, hand-stitched checkerboard patterned heel to tie these elements together. Rounding out the pack is the Old Skool Cap – a deconstructed take on the Vans Old Skool using a cut and paste design treatment. The Old Skool Cap integrates the raised chenille checkerboard pattern decorates the side panels and is complimented by an exposed foam Sidestripe and heel collar.

The lo-top model is finished with a double-layered tongue, pink pull tab and an upside-down sidewall application.”

Vault By Vans x WTAPS – OG Old Skool LX & OG Classic Slip-On LX (8.22.20)

Words via Vans:

“One of Vans’ most coveted and anticipated collaborations is back for its 14th year: Vault by Vans x WTAPS release the latest footwear styles that combine Vans’ timeless styles with WTAPS’ military-meets-urban sensibility. The collection will unveil a secondary drop, including apparel, later this season.

WTAPS is a Japanese brand founded in 2006 by Tetsu Nishiyama with a philosophy that is centered around placing things where they should be and draws inspiration from military clothing due to its practicality, production process, stitching and material details.

This fall, there are two themes prevalent throughout the collection that will emerge in footwear iterations, first with GPS. The GPS theme aligns with the military references for which WTAPS is well-known. The WTAPS logo and GPS coordinates are printed along the outsole of the OG Old Skool LX and OG Classic Slip-On LX. The first release will be in black and white, featuring the WTAPS logo and GPS coordinates printed in white text against the black outsole, as well as the same design imagined on black featuring an orange outsole.

The first Vault by Vans x WTAPS footwear drop will be available at select Vault by Vans dealers on August 22, 2020. Additional styles will be unveiled later this season. To learn more about the collection please visit Vans.com.

We’ve been anticipating this one for awhile now, although it was mostly the iconic WTAPS crossbones that we were waiting for.  These aren’t looking too bad either, but we love us some crossbones!

Vans x Alexander Lee Chang – Higera (Asia Exclusive!)

https-_hypebeast.com_image_2020_08_alexander-lee-chang-vans-higera-fall-winter-2020-sneaker-collab-1

Words via Hypebeast:

“San Francisco-born and Tokyo-based designer Alexander Lee Chang always has skateboarding in mind when preparing new collections, which naturally carries over to his creative collaborations with Vans Japan. Chang’s latest effort is unlike his previous laceless efforts, updating the timeless Vans Era with mountain climbing attributes.

Drawing inspiration from hiking boots, Chang has elevated the iconic skate sneaker with a bevy of thoughtful details, yielding a new silhouette that he’s dubbed the “Higera.” Noticably, the Higera sports a washed-out black color scheme, from the eVent-branded heel to the small kiltie beneath the laces. The eVent tech grants the waterproof upper extra breathability, crucial for footwear intended to keep the feet dry.

Alexander Lee Chang’s collaborative Vans are available on ZOZOTOWN’s page, accompanied by two pairs of mismatched Dickies pants, also designed with Vans to ensure skateboarders can pair the pants and shoes effortlessly.”
