“In 2011, Vans OTW and The Blackouts (Ako and Atiba Jefferson) set out to create a free reggae compilation featuring music from VP Record’s vast catalog of artists. VP Records houses the best in reggae and dance hall music and the twin DJ duo spent weeks carefully selecting each artist for this vinyl compilation. Once the tracks were chosen, the Advocates and Vans set out for Jamaica to finalize the project. In Kingston and Trench Town, The Blackouts were able to walk the steps of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and photographed living reggae legends such as I Wayne, King Jammy and Ding Dong for the album artwork. Although The Blackouts time as OTW Advocates has come and gone, they’ll always be a part of the Vans family.”

OK, don’t beat me up for posting something not directly related to Vans, but in a way this is directly related to Vans. Stacy Peralta, one of the OG Z-Boys, and now famous documentary director, brings to us a new skateboarding documentary about the Bones Brigade of the 80s. The Bones Brigade are the most legendary group of skaters in all skate history, comprised of some of the best vert skaters to ever exist, sponsored by Powell Peralta. Pro skaters like Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Ray Barbee, and others all belonged to this team at one time in their career. Vans recognizes the legends, and most of those names I’ve just mentioned are all sponsored by Vans til today, and have signature shoes as well. I’m a huge documentary fan, and a nostalgia buff, so I can’t wait for this film to hit theatres. Until then, check out this trailer!

“This January, we kicked off our 2012 season of the Vans OTW Collection (www.vans.com/otw) and celebrated the addition of our two new Advocates, grammy-award winning artist Lupe Fiasco and Garage Works Industries/Made By Monsters owner Chris Kong, at the House of Vans Berlin during Germany’s Fashion Week. The night featured artwork exhibitions by Kong as well as fellow Advocates Eric Elms and Dimitri Coste while Lupe Fiasco and music legend Yasiin Bey (the artist formerly known as Mos Def) shut the night down with live performances for Berlin party goers. Check out our video recap of the night, “Live in Berlin”.

Leave it up to Vans to engineer skateboarding’s very first vulcanized cupsole. A new breakthrough for skating, as every skater wants the board feel that a standard Vans vulcanized sole gives, but they also don’t want to shred their pair in about a week. They also want comfort, and let’s face it, Vans aren’t your grandpa’s fancy walking shoes, and a removable sockliner can only help so much. Vans thought they had that figured out in the 80s, by switching to a cupsole design. While they tackled the wear issues, and comfort, they inherently lost that crucial board feel with their skate shoes. Well, after years of skaters having to just deal with tossing out fairly new pairs of Vans vulcanized shoes, they can proudly say that they’ve come up with a happy medium, and I think this is going to be a great thing. They’ve come up with a new design that combines the new age cupsoles, with a vulcanized outer rubber, that gets attached to the shoe in the same old fashion that Vans has always done it, by baking it. You know what? Just watch the damn video already! It’s pretty entertaining!
