Vans Vault x Kicks/HI – “Mynah” OG Sk8-Hi LX & Authentic Lite LX (7.18.15)

KICKSHI-VANS-VAULT-17-OG-SK8HI-LX

Words via KicksHawaii:

“We saw this project as an opportunity to continue the journey of our Mynah Bird mascot (which was born from our Stussy x KICKS/HI collaboration this past summer 2014).  This KICKS/HI x Vans Vault collaboration tells a main “old school to new school” story which begins with the “old school” OG SK8-HI LX, utilizing the original SK8-HI silhouette, done up in: a 6oz canvas upper with embroidered Mynah Bird pattern, leather Vans wave logo that breaks the upper, and pigskin collar lining. The idea was to use a mix of classic, Vans materials that felt premium all together.

We chose the woven lauhala box imagery because woven lauhala mats, hats, and baskets are notable aspects of Hawaii’s handcrafted artistry. It was next to impossible to create actual, woven lauhala boxes for all these Vans, but the idea is to further build upon the “old school to new school” theme: old school craftsmanship displayed on a new school Vans pull-box. Ultimately, we wanted to create a shoebox that would stand out on any shelf, in any stack, etc. and be equally recognized alongside the shoes they house. We envisioned people coveting the shoebox as much as want the shoes.

The canvas dustbag is a nod to our previous “Mauka/Makai” collaboration between Vans Vault x KICKS/HI x Sig Zane. The petroglyph expressions of birds and mountains on the top of the dustbag graphic is representative of “Mauka”, and the waves communicate “Makai” – all coming together, full circle… everything that is old is new again.

KICKSHI-VANS-VAULT-10-AUTHENTIC-LITE

The “new school” play is the use of the AUTHENTIC LITE LX, which is their ultra lightweight, comfort take on standard Vans silhouettes. The upper is a 6oz canvas with embroidered Mynah Bird pattern. We found the addition of the new outsole cushioning, without losing the original styling of the Authentic, to be fascinating because it is always a concern for any brand with any sort of heritage to always keep one step ahead of the pack, but without losing sight of their legacy.

We’ve been wearing fitted caps pretty often again, and felt that it was time to launch a “Mynah” graphic one to accompany the “Mynah” Vans Vault shoes. Available in two colors: Yankees blue or lava tube black.”

Also releasing Saturday is this .75″ tall, soft enamel “Mynah” lapel pin. Flair up any cap, jacket, backpack, business suit, etc.

The latest from Vans Vault comes by way of a few of our favorite classics.  Vans has been feeling pretty vintage lately in their color palette and style, and this time we see our favorite OG’s in a Checkerboard Black model, as well as a Madder Brown/Chili Pepper colorway.  The collection will be available in a few OG Sk8-Hi LX’s as well as an OG Era LX.  Hot Rod has been so nice as to send over a few photos of theirs, which are now up on their site and ready for purchase.  Look for these to release at your local Vault dealer very soon.

Vans Vault x Takashi Murakami – Capsule Collection

Words via Vans:

“Vans  partners with acclaimed Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami for an eclectic collection under Vans’ premium label, Vault by Vans. Celebrated for his vibrant paintings, as well as his immaculate sculptures and designs, Murakami makes his favorite Vans silhouette, the Classic Slip-On – which happens to be the shoe he wears in his studio every day – the focus of his next project. In addition to footwear, the Vault by Vans x Takashi Murakami collaboration brings forth an artistic assortment of apparel and skate decks for release in late June.  Murakami’s anime-influenced aesthetic is renowned for its incorporation of lively colors, shapes and imagery inspired by traditional Japanese art and pop culture. Now generally recognized as a “Superflat” form, a term he himself coined, his work is known for blurring the line between high and low arts.  For fall 2015, two of Murakami’s recurring motifs – the smiling flower and skull patterns – are brought to life in a limited edition selection of Slip-Ons, skateboard decks and tees.

For his collaborative footwear capsule, Murakami presents the Classic Slip-On, in six adult-unisex colorways alongside a trio of toddler-sized offerings. The first half of the adult assortment showcases the smiling flower print in blue, multi-colored and silver line variations while the second half highlights the allover skull arrangement in a darker blue, yellow and gold line color-ups. Murakami’s own dog, Pom, makes a cameo on the footbed of each Slip-On as she sits atop the Vans skateboard logo.  The toddler-sized shoes from the collection are stylized in a more subdued set of color-ups that feature single image prints Murakami’s flower, skull and Pom on each toe vamp.

The Vault by Vans x Takashi Murakami collaboration rounds out with three graphic styles of shirts and skate decks. The tees highlight the smiling flower in a multicolored collage, the skull stamp in an allover silver outline and Murakami himself on a blue background.  The skateboard decks feature the same patterns on their undersides while Pom makes an additional cameo on the wood-finished topside of each deck.

Vans is honored and excited to release the Vault by Vans x Takashi Murakami collection globally on June 27th, 2015. Join the conversation using the #VansxMurakami hashtag on social networks.”

Vans Vault x UBIQ x Ron English – “Camo Deer” OG Era LX & OG Sk8-Hi LX (June 2015)

UBIQ-Vans_05

Excerpts via UBIQ:

“…Using two classic Vans styles, the Era and Sk8 Hi, Ron’s Camo Deer motif is infused into the design, featuring the forest animal sporting the very pattern designed to hunt them…

…Through his works, Ron English became the innovator of “culture jamming,” a process in which he hijacks established billboards by remixing their visuals to speak out against questionable corporate interests…

…Our second Vault by Vans collab features Ron English’s artwork on two iconic Vans silhouettes: Sk8-Hi LX and Era LX. Both styles wear the “Camo Deer” illustration, inspired by the deer and woodsy surroundings of his upstate New York studio. Featuring a lone deer painted entirely in hunter’s camouflage pattern in red, orange, yellow, green and black set against a forest of trees with Autumn leaves, with the lush grass and pink flowers depicted on the triple branded insole. On the Sk8-Hi LX, the Camo Deer roams the canvas between black suede panels, whereas the full scenery of the Pop Woods covers the low-top canvas upper of the Era LX. The shoe box itself is also a work of his art, as it depicts the Camo Deer graphics in its entirety…”

Vans Vault x UBIQ x Ron English – Camo Deer Pack (Video)

Words via UBIQ:
“In prepping for our upcoming project with Vault by Vans and Ron English, we took a trip to the legendary artists’s studio in upstate New York where we we also met fellow artist Naturel, and the two had a one-on-one chat about Ron’s career, surrounding himself in the woods and what lead to the infamous camo deer.”

Vans Vault x Slam Jam – “25th Anniversary” Collection (June 11, 2015)

(Disclaimer:  We do not have official word that this is a Vault release, but this is Slam Jam, one of the premiere Vault accounts in Europe, and I couldn’t get a good view of the heel tab in the video, but the heel pad inside the shoe sort of leads me to believe that this is in fact a Vault release.  These are wild, and completely awesome.  Not for everybody, but definitely for the collector.  If only we knew how wide of a release this was going to be, so that way we could try and score pairs from more local Vault accounts since they did say that these will be available at select Vans retailers.  Enjoy the video and pics!)

Words via Slam Jam:

“Keeping their ongoing collaborative effort alive, this time Slam Jam met with Vans to lay a hand on their latest 25th-anniversary brainwave.

Drawing inspiration from a bunch of talented artists, whose installations share a common denominator, the project’s focus is on the theme of colors. Acid, shiny, matte, psychedelic: different tones which play a lead character role rather than being just a component of the painting.

Some of Vans’ most iconic styles have been used as an ideal canvas to be matched with such bold colors: the result is a series of neat products which nevertheless express a strong personality. The original Slip-On, Old School and Sk8 Hi have been preserved in their original structure, with the canvas upper resting on top of the popular gum waffle sole, but they have been revitalized with color motifs which create different patterns.

The collaboration’s focus on colors will be further amplified by a dedicated in-store set up designed by Michela Natella (well known for her works for the magazine Toilet Paper), who used an array of different materials, such as sand, wood and Plexiglas.

The Slam Jam X Vans collection, which will be introduced by a film produced by Milan-based video artist Simone Rovellini, will be launched with a special event at Slam Jam Milano on June 11th. On the same date, it will also be available at selected Vans retailers and at slamjamsocialism.com.”

This is something interesting.  Nice Kicks just posted up this awesome artwork from their artist and friend Larry Luk, who created his own personal renderings of what the upcoming Vans Vault x Murakami collection may look like.  Now, let’s be clear.  Official images haven’t been released just yet, but there are a few leaked pics floating around out there and it’s safe to say that these creative designs aren’t too far off from some of the ones that we’ve seen.  What do you think?  Once official info drops, then we can look back on these and see how close Larry Luk was in imagining the collection!
