Fellow Wafflehead, Clayton Boone (@wearingwaffles) and I get together for an hour long chat about Vans, Vans, and more Vans.  He just started doing these Instagram Live videos, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each one he’s done.  It’s grassroots and it’s simple, so don’t get turned off by the Zoom-esque audio and video quality!  The content is still entertaining, I think?  There’s no real format or style, other than just talking about Vans, and our love for them.  We talked a little bit about how Under The Palms started.  What a few of my favorite pairs are.  Why I don’t care to show off my entire collection, and specifically my storage unit lol.  I gossip a little.  I name drop.  I drop a little bit of a surprise at the end, in regards to this year’s 31 Days of Vans campaign.  You don’t want to miss a second of this fun little interview we did.  I’ll definitely be back to talk more with Clayton, and hopefully his following will have grown 10x in size!  I’m stoked that he actually created something, that to be honest I’ve been trying to think of a way to do for a long time, but for one, I didn’t know where to start, but second, I just don’t like to be on the front side of the camera.  I guess I need to work on that.  Maybe we’ll start doing something like this one day.  Maybe!

MAKE CHUKKAS GREAT AGAIN!  That’s what I’ve been saying for years now.  Call me that old head, who lives in his not so distant past, trying to tell all the youngins what’s REALLY cool, while they rightfully ignore me.  The mainstream sneaker culture has been turned all the way inside out for awhile now.  Used and abused for everything it has to offer, and boy has it had a lot to offer as of lately.  Prices have inflated beyond any rational comprehension, with no real justification, other than the “shit on toast” factor.  If one person sees someone else eating shit on toast, well then by all means, they want it as well.  This is great for those making the shit and the toast, and those who are selling it.  Problem is, there’s way too much of it, and it’s leaving a huge skid mark on our culture.  (I’m sure that one went over some of your heads).

In comes Jimmy Gorecki, most recently known for his brands JSP and Standard Issue Tees.  A former pro skater for the likes of Zoo York and ICECREAM, certified with the OG culture that forged the path for what we have today, so you know he’s been around for some super dope shit, and you know he’s experienced enough to know what it takes to make a future classic.  If you’re into trends and being on the leading edge of fashion, then you may not care about classic anything, but to me, this shoe garners much respect, and these are the types of collabs us Vans collectors eat up.  This is one of those releases that speaks directly to our core demographic.  It’s rooted in skate, streetwear, and community, which is something we have a passion for.  We always say that the best collabs have a story behind them, and these pay homage to a person, place, and era all at once.  Some bought them to support their friend Jimmy.  Others bought them cause of the exceptional marketing that led up to the release.  I bought them cause they are exactly what we’ve been waiting for.  A name and a brand that’s relatable.  A guy that’s into all the same shit we are.  A friend of a friend (shout-out to Arvie Gimeno @albinoandpreto, who fyi, was my plug on our original OTWS “Bones” hats we made years back, when he was still operating as SntmntlCo).  Basically, what I’m trying to say is, he represents us hardcore Vans collectors, whether it was intentional or not, and I’m sure I can speak for everyone else, by saying thank you Jimmy!

I was a little relieved that the Chukka was chosen for this release.  A Vans model that’s a little bit off the radar for the new jacks, but coveted by those who’ve been buying the rare and limited Vans shit since the early days of Vans Syndicate and the like.  Back in the day, you couldn’t see a premium collaboration without a Chukka in the lineup.  The Chukka 79 VLT LX was the right move.  Just a little bit different than your average Vans Chukka Boot, with a few layered panels that runs up the lace eyerow and around the collar and ankle of the shoe, as well as a panel that wraps around the entire heel.  Take note of the “VLT” label in the name.  This is something introduced fairly recently to the Vault line, to differentiate from the “OG” or ORIGINALS label that is also offered within the Vault lineup.  VLT’s are typically reserved for the slightly more sophisticated shoes, thus the slightly higher price points.  Not sure if it’s justified by materials and build, or if it’s purely for luxury bragging rights, but nonetheless, these are VLT’s.  The Black and Marshmallow colorways are equally perfect.  It’s all about preference.  With premium pig suede, brass eyelets, custom printed Racing Red checkerboard foxing scenes, Crystal Blue translucent blue toe bumpers and waffle soles, and custom printed Ultracush® insoles, you can’t go wrong with either.

These are the types of releases we get excited for.  At first, I told myself I would buy only one colorway, but after going back and forth, I knew I’d regret passing on either one.  Thankfully, I was able to check-out on two separate orders with Kinetic (Nocturnal), one of only 3 places you could get these.  Also just a fun fact since we’re Vans snob elitists over here, it was mistakenly reported that this release was the first time that a Vault release was allowed by a Vans Skate retailer, but for those who know, this is actually the 2nd time.  Can anyone guess the first collection?  It might’ve been a mix-up with production back in the day, as I believe it was only sold at Core Skate accounts, but the shoes were definitely Vault, with Vault tags and LX labeling on the shoes.  Hint:  it was a collaboration with one of Vans’ pro skate icons.  I might have narrowed that down too much, making it too easy!

On a personal note, thanks if you took the time to read all this.  Now days, it’s hard to get stoked about a lot of releases, so I tend to just do the copy and paste thing from blogs, and the various info that the friends at Vans send me, but when something is worth talking about, you better believe I’m going to heap some praise, and shed light on it.  I’m very rarely endorsed, and if so, I’m clear about it.  These came out of pocket at full retail price plus shipping.  Not a small chunk of change for some Vans, but I’m calling these a future classic, so having them in the collection was a must.  Hope we get to see some more cool shit like this in the near future!

Vault By Vans x LQQK – OG Chukka Boot LX (UTP Review!)

IMG_3535

I received a nice package the other day from our friends over at Vans, and to my surprise it was a pair of OG Chukka Boot LX’s from the Vault x LQQK collection, accompanied by a super dope custom made vinyl crate, showcasing some printed graphics featured in this collection.  They know me so well!  Before I get into reviewing this pair, I wanted to say thank you to Michelle C. over at Vans, who always thinks of me, and keeps me tapped in to the latest and greatest things happening over at Vans.  There’s many more friends we have over there, but she’s special special lol.  Thank you Michelle!

So right off the bat, this sophomore collection checks all the boxes when it comes to what we consider a proper collaboration.  It’s been awhile since we’ve discussed the criteria, so for our new friends, here’s the 5 things we like to see:  (1) New and original material, design element, or color, (2) Thoughtful packaging, (3) Branding, (4) Story or connection to something, (5) Limited or exclusive (preferably numbered when possible).  This collection hits on all of that.  From the combination of nubuck suede, paint splatter, and debossed Vans circle logos, to the super dope lime green brick drawer boxes, to the subtle branding on the outside forefoot of the vulc sidewalls and back side of the Vans flag, to the story connection of their print studio in NYC.

Many of us may not have known much about LQQK prior to their Vault collabs, but you have to give it up to Vans Vault for providing this “LQQK” into their cool place.  No hype.  Not for anything more, than to just introduce us to a really cool company, who does some pretty cool shit.  We’re always learning something new, and cool, and who else is going to bring that to you?

Check out more of my personal review pics after the jump, all taken with my iPhone 11 Pro.  Green if that matters, lol.

It’s Time For Another Year of 31 Days of Vans! (#31daysofVans)

Yes, it’s that time of year again to celebrate our unofficial Vans holiday, created by us, for us!  Show off your love for all things Vans.  There’s no formula to this shit, just share your pairs, and use the campaign hashtag #31daysofvans.  Let’s see how much the Vans Family has grown from last year.  Thanks to Kyle for producing some sick banner graphics for the cause!

Vault By Vans x Blends – OG Epoch LX “Bones” (2.29.20 & UTP Review!)

IMG_9836

When we first caught a sneak peek at the next set of Blends Vans to come our way, we were all stoked to see them use a new shoe for their iconic Bones catalog, with the Epoch or Style 73 as it was originally called.  This silo has a very unique flying V logo that is exclusive to this shoe, and we’re sure Blends didn’t want to take away from that.  Adding their unmistakable signature Bones styling to that flying V was the right move.  Some might say “more bones???”, but we say “MORE BONES!!!”.  We absolutely love these, and will be looking to double up if possible.

The shoe features hairy suede throughout, except for the marshmallow premium leather accents by way of the bones and the heel mustache.  These feature marshmallow colored vulc soles, in the new Vault Originals shape, complete with glossy foxing tape, shrunken waffle grip, and that sexy, curvy sidewall!  There’s minimal Blends branding on the heelpad, and the shoe comes with two pairs of laces, one being waxed marshmallow, and the other black standard.  The Blends all-black drawer box and dustbag are also back for this release.  We’ve taken a grip of photos, including a few in the alternate lace option.  I could seriously go with either and be completely satisfied.

We’ve all been waiting for Blends to give us a release date, and I can confidently say these will be releasing in two weeks, on Saturday Feb. 29th, at all chapter stores as well as online.  You’ve heard it here first!

Under The Palms x Kyle Sliney – “Rocket Times” Tee (Now Available For Pre-Order!)

FastTimesUTPWhiteback

Inspired by an iconic movie that plays a big part of our Vans culture, we wanted to pay homage to this movie, and upcoming sneaker release, by bringing you this awesome graphic tee, designed by our bro, UTP OG Kyle “rocketgoof” Sliney, aka @iamrocketkyle, aka Pop Rocket Creations. I’ve had this idea for awhile, and I couldn’t go to anyone else but Kyle, for this retro design. He absolutely nailed it.

We will be printing up a limited run of these in either Black or White, but you know you can’t pick just one, so order both! Printed on the same Shaka Retro 6.5 oz soft tee that we used for our last design, which we got nothing but great feedback on, so we’ll continue to use it. Glad y’all liked our decision to go with those! (Also, the t-shirt mockup pics are simulated, but the graphic will be 13″ wide on back, and 4″ wide on front)

Pre-order pricing in effect for 2 weeks only, and will end on Friday 2/28 so don’t sleep. Oh, and of course we will have a special themed sticker-pak for all of you who pre-order.

Hero For Kids Foundation – Fundraiser Campaign Update!

Thank you so much to my very talented brother @LazyWORK for this totally awesome artwork, to help promote our GoFundMe campaign, in partnership with @ofthesamevein, and @thelab_bp, to raise funds with the @heroforkidsfoundation to get some Vans for the homeless youth of Orange County. Sometimes, all it takes is a new pair of shoes to boost someone’s self esteem, and that’s one of our goals with this campaign. Charity doesn’t always have to be so serious and practical, (although shoes are very practical to these kids, especially the ones I saw skating during their recess, today!), but it can be unique, and done in our own way, which is just what we’re good at. Today it’s shoes, but in the future, we’ll work on some fun new ways to help the Hero For Kids foundation. School functions; Funding field trips; Pizza parties; Clothing drives; etc. Our GoFundMe campaign has reached the $1k mark, and we still need more, so please make any donation that you can. We’ll be sending out a THANK YOU card of this artwork as well, and don’t worry, the same goes for everyone who’s already donated. We’ll just need you to email us your info!

Vans For Homeless Youth of Orange County (GoFundMe campaign)

Attention!! Calling on everyone in our Vans community and beyond! I’ve got an important mission that I’m hoping you all can get behind me on.  I wanted to do something special for a special group of kids down in the OC, with a few of my friends from Waves of Grace, @ofthesamevein and @thelab_bp. These kids’ situation sucks, to put it lightly.  If you have HBO, please search for the documentary “Homeless: The Motel Kids of Orange County”.  The doc is about 10 yrs old, but the school still exists and supports new kids each year through their charity Hero For Kids.  Let’s get together and show these kids that we fully support them and just show how amazing our Vans community is!

Blends CM x Under The Palms – Meet The Waffleheads (Event Recap!)

BlendsEasonPics010

This past Thursday we co-hosted our first of hopefully many meet and greets, to celebrate Vans culture in a way unlike any other culture out there.  Some sneaker brands organize their communities around an outdoor activity, a basketball tournament, a sneaker convention of sorts, etc.  Something that represents their demographic and their style.  Well, it’s kind of hard to put a finger on what exactly our Vans sneaker community is, and perhaps that’s the best part about it.  Like the campaign slogan a few years back, “Not Just One Thing”, so as are we.  When Julz, Nobu, and I first started talking about an idea of doing an event, we had no direction, and nothing to build off of, and it sorta’ got put on the back burner a few times.  Well, as Vans started rolling out the WAFFLEHEADS campaign, and my name started popping up, that started to provide us with some inspiration.  The Blends CM crew decided we should host an event for me, showcasing some of my collection, similar to how some of my pairs are currently on display in Chicago and in NYC at two of Vans’ flagship stores, but we’d try to add another layer to it, by also hosting a social gathering, to bring out our local WAFFLEHEADS family.  Perfect!  Now the work starts.

So now that we had a “waffleheads” theme to run with, we started thinking of all the possibilities for an event.  I’ve been working on a new Antidot sneaker refresher fragrance with the SolScience guys, and it was based around a maple syrup scent, geared for fresh waffles, aka Vans, so I wanted to make sure we could somehow work them into the mix, which turned out great.  We then thought how cool it would be to get the Vans waffle maker machine for our event, which we’ve only seen at a handful of them.  We knew it was a shot in the dark, and we’d most likely get shot down, but we just had to ask.  Our PR homie Michelle C. handed us off to the Vans marketing team, and boy did we get hooked up.  We not only got Vans to come make us about 100 or so waffles, they also hooked us up with chain-stitch artist Ben Goetting, to personalize the chore coats that were being sold during the event, which then turned into people getting to customize their free Vans tote bags that were being given out.  I apologize for having Ben stay til closing, due to the long line and high demand for his art services!  We also had free beer from Bootleggers, who recently opened a tap room about 50 yards away from Blends CM, and what’s better than free beer?!

The most important thing about the event wasn’t the rare sneakers on display.  Nope.  It was our people.  It was a reunion of sorts.  Some guys I haven’t seen for a few years now, since the last time the #blendsboiz camped out for sneakers!  Some were new friends that just started to discover our community, and some just happened to be sneaker enthusiasts who happened to stop by while on vacation from Canada, who were stoked to see something like this going on!  That’s just so cool to me.  Our plan of having the event on a Thursday night, to attract friends and fam from Vans HQ worked out quite nicely too, as I met a few folks who I never met before.  My family came out in droves as well, and I thank each and every one of you.  Seriously, most of the pics you’re going to see are of the people.  That’s what makes this shit cool for me.  If I can get people to come out, by way of this Vans vehicle, then I’ll ride it til’ the wheels fall off!  Stay tuned for more fun and innovative ways to incorporate more and more people to join in on our fun and youthful culture.

Please enjoy all of the pics after the jump, who mostly came from my homie Eason, Nate, and my bro Ron.
