WAFFLEHEADS Vans Brand Ambassador Campaign Featuring DJ Guamstyles! @vans #waffleheads #OffTheWall

Who knew that what started out as just another brand of sneaker to collect, would grow into something as big and impactful, as what my friends and I have built over the past decade. Under The Palms was created as a Vans community gathering place, which slowly turned into a worldwide community, which turned into a culture. All over the world, there are now pockets of Vans collecting communities, with their own branding and names, and it’s growing each day. The more I learned about Vans’ heritage, I found that their same values of being original, authentic, and different, are ideals that so many others around the globe also believe in. So when my friends at Vans reached out to me to learn about collecting Vans, I was more than happy to introduce them to my long list of friends, but they wanted to hear it from me instead, and so here I am as one of the selected Vans Brand Ambassadors for 2019, representing the worldwide Vans sneaker collecting community, who are being dubbed #waffleheads. I hope I’ve represented us properly, and in a way that can speak for us all. We chose to go left, when everybody was going right!

Please feel free to share this video on as many platforms as you possibly can.  Not for me, but for all of us.  I’ve always wanted Vans to recognize us all, and to find a way to connect with their Vans sneaker collecting community, similar in how Sole Collector did with Nike.  I want this campaign to reach all over the world, to show our strength in numbers.  I promise to do my work and try to bring more of you on this journey, to tell some of your stories as well.  It’s more than just buying sneakers.  Oh and by the way, I’m actually from Glendora, not Ventura.  I guess that sounded more glamorous, lol?  Check out the rest of the waffleheads over at https://www.vans.com/waffleheads.

Vault By Vans x Modernica – A Visit To Modernica’s Factory In Los Angeles #vansxmodernica #modernica #vaultbyvans #vansvault

VaultxModernicaPressDay 008

This past Wednesday, we were invited to a special event hosted by Modernica and Vault By Vans, where we not only got to get a first-hand look at this weekend’s upcoming highly anticipated collaboration, but we also got to learn about the company who has brought us so many great collaborations, with some of our favorite brands in the industry.  Now, you may think that I want to talk about their extensive back catalog, and name drop all the big brand names who fill up their collaborations section, because you know…for the culture.  But to be honest, I was looking through a different set of lenses that day, and really wanted to share my appreciation for all of the craftsmen who make up the majority of the company.  I’ve always been that kid who got excited when Mr. Rogers went to visit the local factory to see things being made, and to this day, if I come across How It’s Made on tv, I’m not changing the channel!  I have an understanding and appreciation for people in the skilled trades industry.  Mentorship, and the idea of working under someone with more knowledge and experience to gain a skill, is something I personally relate to in my own life, and value a lot.

VaultxModernicaPressDay 102

We got to see the actual chairs being produced, from their beginning stages of shredded fiberglass, to their very last step of assembly.  I felt bad, because we were obviously impeding on their workspace, getting in their way.  The place is loud, and I’m not sure if my high was because of simply being invited to the event, or just the fumes from the fiberglass resin filling the shop!  From there, it was on to the woodshop.  This is where the majority of the craftsmen work.  The amount of wood furniture and accessories they make, is staggering.  I love walking into a woodworking shop, and smelling the sawdust in the air.  You can’t walk out of this place without looking like Pig-Pen.  Co-owner Jay Novak, had mentioned to me while we were walking through the factory, that some of his craftsmen have been there for over 20 years, including multiple generations of family.  There’s so much going on here, it’s just so much to take in, in one day.  There’s a wood-forming machine that bends veneer sheets into those cool curved wooden furniture pieces you always wondered how they made.  There’s an upholstery shop, where all of the cushion and fabrics get attached, and there’s also a composites section where you see some other cool curvy fiberglass furniture being produced.  The archive section is also pretty neat, where you can see some of the past collabs stacked up on shelves, and also the blanks section where shells are ready to be custom ordered.  It’s definitely a beehive of activity.

VaultxModernicaPressDay 190

The product is of the highest quality, made right here in Los Angeles, CA, by carpenters and craftsmen with decades of experience.  It’s not glamorous.  It’s sometimes dirty.  It’s tiresome, but there’s this sense of accomplishment that just feeds the soul.  There’s satisfaction in working with your hands to create something from a raw material, to seeing it as a finished product in the end.  The amount of time that went into making each and every piece of the chair, tells you how much attention to detail matters to them.  Hell, just take a look at the custom box Vans had gifted us, made by Modernica, just to put a pair of shoes into!  That box is so sick!  (It’s near the end of my photo gallery).  There’s no substitute for the real thing, and in this day and age, authenticity means something.  This collection is special, and who knows if it will ever happen again.  Two SoCal brands, representing the epitome of style, with a timeless collection that we get the opportunity to own a piece of.

VaultxModernicaPressDay 285

Once again, I’m absolutely humbled by Vans for letting me be a part of these cool media events.  Special thanks to the Vans PR girls who always show me love, Michelle, Taylor, Laura, and everyone else, and also our old Blends Costa Mesa homie Brian Chor, who as Modernica’s new Art Director, came out with a banger right out the gates!  Proud of you homie!  I’m sure I get invited, mainly cause I’m local, haha!  I’m the guy that sticks out amongst the rest, because I’m not fashion forward, and I don’t really care how I dress, but I guess when I have a passion for the waffle sole, I get to bring an entirely different perspective, perhaps one that most Vans fans share.  I highly doubt any other fashion blogger who was there, is going to go on and on about the people responsible for making the product and geeking out on the manufacturing process, but maybe our following will appreciate it.

VaultxModernicaPressDay 080

Last but not least, I just want you to have a different perspective on what you’re actually paying for, when you decide to spend $500 on one of these chairs, as that’s not easy for most of us Vans collectors.  We’re not regular furniture collectors.  We’re probably trying to figure out where we’d even put this damn thing, but just know that it’s timeless.  It’s going to be cool forever.  I’m going to leave you with a little excerpt that I copied from the Modernica site:

“This chair is easily one of the most important and recognizable designs of the twentieth century.  They were originally designed in 1948, as an entry in The Museum of Modern Art’s International Design Competition, and it should be noted that Modernica is responsible for revitalizing the almost lost art of high-pressure fiberglass molding. The factory is home to the historic fiberglass presses and specialized machinery that has been used in the production of thousands of chairs for over three generation. Since 1999, Modernica has steadfastly produced the chairs as they were originally created, preserving fiberglass chair legacy and craft.  In 2000, Modernica revived this potentially lost art of high-pressure, molded fiberglass. Modernica creates each shell, by hand, one-by-one, in their Los Angeles factory—just as they had been designed, developed, and produced in Southern California in the 1950s. Modernica uses all of the original presses and specialized equipment obtained from Century Plastics. To ensure authenticity of production, the initial shell chair production was overseen by Sol Fingerhut and Irv Green, the same team employed over sixty years ago to develop the original technology. Modernica creates each chair with the charge of adhering to the original tactile qualities, texture, and characteristics that alone are unique to the fiberglass shell chair. Their historic equipment has created thousands of chairs for three generations of chair lovers — and everyday Modernica continues to produce beautiful chairs for upcoming generations.”

A Day At The New Vans Corporate Headquarters (8.30.17)

IMG_7145

I know it’s been a few weeks since we were invited to tour the Vans Corporate Headquarters, but life has really been in the way and I haven’t been able to really sit down and write.  I mainly wanted to share with you, some random photos that I was able to take while touring this amazing new facility.  Situated right off the 405 freeway in Costa Mesa, just West of Harbor Blvd., perfectly visible from the freeway, stands this gigantic checkerboard wrapped building, with an even more giant Vans logo on each side of the building.  It’s even more magnificent from the inside courtyard, where you’ve all seen that big red staircase that connects all 3 floors together.

IMG_7142

I started out my day meeting up with the Strictly Waffles fam Eddie and Joey in the parking lot.  We arrived inside to all of our Vans PR friends, and a few familiar faces I’ve met at past events.  We were provided with some breakfast items and Stumptown Coffee which is the coffee of choice throughout the main cafe, and the coffee kitchens situated on each floor.  I was all about that nitro cold brew that was on tap, served up by their very own barista Brandon.  This was too awesome.

IMG_7147

The day of course started with a nice introduction from Steve Van Doren, and his sister Cheryl, talking about what was important when asking employees about what they wanted the new building to have, as well as making sure it was a place that made you love being at work.  There are private think spaces throughout the entire building, an outdoor courtyard complete with a bell that can be rung and heard throughout the entire place, when you make a significant achievement, and there’s even a game room loaded with air hockey, foosball, and shuffleboards to blow off a little steam on.  Vans memorabilia is on display almost everywhere you look.  Band collab shoes, custom Fender guitars, and even the Vans Born Free 9 motorcycle that was built by Thompson Cycles. Vans Showcases Breadth of Classics Collection and Honors its Five Footwear Icons (Style Guide)

SP17_Classics_NJOT_SlipOn_W1A6968

With more than 50 years of “Off The Wall” design heritage, Vans honors the legacy of its five Classic icons – Authentic, Era, Old Skool, Sk8-Hi and Classic Slip-On – showing the original action sports brand is Not Just One Thing. This latest campaign and video highlights Vans’ Icons through a compilation of images bringing to life the creative spirit that has connected Vans with artists, athletes, musicians and designers for decades.

When Vans opened for business in 1966, Paul Van Doren’s promise was to provide affordable, quality footwear for all. The original footwear model, the Authentic, was quickly enhanced to meet the demands of skateboarding as skaters of the Dogtown era adopted Vans’ sticky waffle sole to carve and surf the pavement. That organic partnership with those early innovators brought forth the introduction of the Era, Old Skool, Sk8-Hi and Classic Slip-On. These five silhouettes remain in the line today and are the DNA to the thousands of styles that have been designed and released since 1966.

The Authentic, Era, Old Skool, Sk8-Hi and Classic Slip-On serve as a blank canvas that transform within an individual’s creative self-expression. Whether its skateboarding, exploring, sketching or just showing off your personal style, Vans Classic Icons live through all forms of creativity. Those who live and wear Vans Classics are Not Just One Thing.

Vans, the Icon of Creative Expression, Highlights the Diverse Meaning of “Off The Wall”

Words via Vans:

“Vans, the original action sports and one of the largest youth culture brands in the world, today announced the release of its global campaign, This Is Off The Wall.  Following up on Vans’ 50th anniversary series, which welcomed newcomers to the brand’s rich heritage and thanked decades of loyalists, the 2017 campaign focuses on creative expression, the core of Vans’ “Off The Wall” culture.

To demonstrate the breadth of activities and pursuits that define “Off The Wall,” Vans has developed a digital campaign utilizing a range of film techniques, from slow motion to time-lapse, focusing on the creative endeavors in action sports, art, music and street culture that Vans champions. Vans showcases the essence of “Off The Wall” through a diverse set of ambassadors within a hero montage and a series of shorter spots.

“The meaning of ‘Off The Wall’ is the very ethos of Vans, the very identity of our brand – its everything we stand for,” said Doug Palladini, Vans Global Brand President. “We’re pleased to tell this inspiring and sincere, five-decade-long story through our family of ambassadors who have been brought together by their diverse passions for creativity.”

This Is Off The Wall taps into Vans professional athletes, artists, musicians and style purveyors who have long and personal histories with the brand. Their stories are each unique and told through a variety of tones, but ultimately shine a light on the passions that Vans has always supported. The visual nature and emotions that are evoked in each story are easily translatable around the world, showing that creative exprAession is inclusive and without borders.

Fara Howard, Vans’ VP of Global Marketing, shares, “It’s hard to assign one definition to ‘Off The Wall’, so we wanted to deliver a campaign that truly shows how our mantra takes shape through various forms of creativity. Whether that’s through music, surfing, skateboarding or customizing a pair of shoes, all the stories told will communicate the distinct way in which Vans looks at the world.”

“Off The Wall” was a term coined when skateboarders in the mid ‘70s were landing new tricks in empty pools by literally skating off the wall. At that time, skateboarders were outcasts of society who expressed themselves through the style of their sport. These individuals were not only the pioneers of skateboarding, but also lived and breathed creativity through art, music, fashion and local culture. For more than 50 years, “Off The Wall” has been synonymous with that original spirit of rebellion and creative expression.

Vans Vault x Robert Williams – More Pics From The Event!

20160723-_MG_2814

I admit I’m not the best when it comes to media coverage of events, and that’s why I try to provide a more personal approach to my recaps.  Thankfully we have other nice folks at Vans willing to cover our asses when it comes to the media side of things, providing much more outstanding photos than I was able to take.  Thank you Vans once again, and hopefully we’ll meet up again for another one of these things.

Enjoy about 70 awesome pics after the jump!

Vans Vault x Robert Williams – Release Party Recap (7.23.16)

Robt1

When our friends at Vans send out the invite for a special occasion, you know we try to do our best to provide you with the same experiences that we are fortunate to have.  As a true Vans fan boy, I’ll always consider myself lucky to be a part of these things, and to be able to rub elbows and chop it up with like-minded individuals about Vans…it just doesn’t get better than that.  This was a night to celebrate Robert Williams though, and his collaboration with Vault by Vans  for Vans’ 50th Anniversary celebration, and just like I’ve done in the past, I want to take you along for the evening’s festivities as if you were there with me, like I hope most of you wanted to be.
