Vans Partners with Chef Paul Kahan to Release Limited Footwear Capsule and Raise Awareness for Chicago Charity, Pilot Light

Vans_PAULKAHAN2

Vans continues to foster the creative culture of the food industry by partnering with celebrated Chef Paul Kahan, and One Off Hospitality Group to showcase a footwear capsule, in conjunction with four of their Chicago restaurants: Publican Quality Meats, avec, Blackbird and Dove’s Luncheonette. A special event to highlight Kahan’s culinary creativity is set for April 1 at House of Vans Chicago and will raise money toward Pilot Light, a non-profit organization of which Kahan is a founding member.

Kahan’s accolades are many and Vans is proud to partner with the chef on a four-piece capsule that includes premium versions of Vans’ Classic silhouettes. The Old Skool, Sk8-Hi and Classic Slip-On highlight colorways that are drawn directly from each restaurant’s aesthetic. A grey Old Skool speaks to the effortless Mediterranean style avec employs, while the Sk8-Hi highlights the diner setting of Dove’s Luncheonette, blending a retro and modern design to compliment the restaurant. The Classic Slip-On takes on design features from Publican Quality Meats and Blackbird with subtle pops of color that coordinate with their iconic logos. Each style features a contoured drop-in Vans UltraCush™ footbed for all-day maximum comfort, Vansguard™ canvas uppers to repel water, as well as dirt and slip-resistant, vulcanized lugged outsoles.

“I’ve worn Vans my whole life, and feel that skaters, cooks and musicians share a lot of culture and creativity. I’m excited to be part of that,” Kahan said. Despite accolades and adoration, Kahan’s biggest accomplishment remains his work as a mentor for young chefs. He works to foster empowerment, providing the resources necessary to grow, both as a chef and person.

To highlight the importance of food education, House of Vans Chicago will host an event, complete with a raffle, to raise awareness toward Pilot Light. Pilot Light, a nonprofit organization that helps children make healthier choices by connecting the lessons they learn in their classrooms to the foods they eat on their lunch trays, at home and in their communities, directly works with local Chicago schools and provides an interactive way for children to learn about the importance of nutrition. The funds from the raffle will be used to support Pilot Light programming at local school, Mitchell Elementary, from now throughout 2018. In addition, House of Vans Chicago will host a performance by post-punk band, Preoccupations, which is open to public with RSVP at houseofvans.com.

“Vans’ ethos is driven by creative expression and our brand has been lucky enough to partner with a wide range of creative individuals that bring the ‘Off The Wall’ meaning to life,” said Doug Palladini, Vans Global Brand President. “Chefs like Paul exemplify creativity and Vans is honored to support his work in educating our youth that creative avenues exist through all professions.”

Chef Paul Kahan is passionately seasonal, unconventionally creative and dedicated to the inspiration of classical cuisine. Kahan has received international acclaim for Blackbird, avec, The Publican, Big Star, Publican Quality Meats, Nico Osteria, Dove’s Luncheonette, Publican Quality Bread, Publican Tavern O’Hare and most recently, Publican Anker. Kahan has earned the praise of many who claim him to be one of America’s most influential working chefs.

As the only existing indoor skatepark in the Chicago metropolitan area, local skaters will experience a custom-built course, featuring the reimagination of iconic West Coast skate spots, Lockwood and China Banks, plus additional obstacles for every skill level. The backdrop to the Lockwood-inspired obstacle features an ivy-covered wall that pays homage to Wrigley Field, using ‘66, Vans’ founding year as the outfield distance marker. Additionally, guests can enjoy a beautifully repurposed Goose Island brewpub bar that was originally located steps away from Wrigley Field. Located at 113 N Elizabeth St., House of Vans Chicago will always be free and open to the public.

“Chicago has a rich and eclectic history across action sports, art, music and street culture akin to Vans’ own roots and ‘Off The Wall’ ethos,” said Doug Palladini, Vans’ Global Brand President. “It’s an honor to bring House of Vans to life here in Chicago so we can grow our Vans family and give back to the creative communities that make this city so vibrant.”

Under The Palms MY x SneakerLAH – Sneaker Convention (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) @underthepalmsmy #underthepalmsmy #sneakerlah

(click photo to enlarge)

Join Under The Palms Malaysia this weekend, at Kuala Lumpur’s premier sneaker convention SneakerLAH.  This is the first time that they’ve requested a Vans display, which is proof that the Vans culture is alive and thriving in the Southeast Pacific.  Our bro Izam runs our @underthepalmsmy page, and helps spread the Vans gospel all over Malaysia, so it was no surprise that he was approached to be a part of this event, and showcase some of his rare Vans.  He’s an artistic person, so he has a great sense of style and design, as you can tell by the photo of his space above.  He’ll be updating the IG account with pics from the event all weekend, so check it out from time to time.  Props my brotha!

I’ve since updated this post, to include a bunch of pics that were taken of the event and exhibit.  Check them out after the jump!

20160723-_MG_2814

I admit I’m not the best when it comes to media coverage of events, and that’s why I try to provide a more personal approach to my recaps.  Thankfully we have other nice folks at Vans willing to cover our asses when it comes to the media side of things, providing much more outstanding photos than I was able to take.  Thank you Vans once again, and hopefully we’ll meet up again for another one of these things.

Enjoy about 70 awesome pics after the jump!

Vans Vault x Robert Williams – Release Party Recap (7.23.16)

Robt1

When our friends at Vans send out the invite for a special occasion, you know we try to do our best to provide you with the same experiences that we are fortunate to have.  As a true Vans fan boy, I’ll always consider myself lucky to be a part of these things, and to be able to rub elbows and chop it up with like-minded individuals about Vans…it just doesn’t get better than that.  This was a night to celebrate Robert Williams though, and his collaboration with Vault by Vans  for Vans’ 50th Anniversary celebration, and just like I’ve done in the past, I want to take you along for the evening’s festivities as if you were there with me, like I hope most of you wanted to be.

House of Vans Summer Parties Series Flyer

Vans continues its year-long celebration of 50 years “Off The Wall” with the return of the House of Vans summer series, House Parties. Back for six exhilarating shows in Greenpoint, the free House of Vans events marry a robust music lineup with an elevated art exhibition, setting the stage for an experience that pays homage to New York City’s punk, hardcore and hip hop heritage alongside Vans’ one-of-a-kind culture. Presenting 18 acts from a range of genres all representing Vans’ diverse musical aesthetic, House of Vans will welcome DIIV, Sleep, Rae Sremmurd, Battles, Quicksand, Converge, Neon Indian, Jon Hopkins, The Field, BadBadNotGood and more.

To celebrate the evolution of street culture and the aesthetic of New York City, Vans has partnered with several visual artists to transform the House of Vans into an art experience that will showcase the cultural intersection of punk, hardcore, rap and skateboarding through various mediums. The immersive experience begins as guests approach House of Vans where they will be treated to a special light installation customized by Ken Farmer that is inspired by a once flickering light existing several years ago on the building’s burnt out marquee. Upon entering, the space will continue to evolve with several installations including graffiti by iconic NYC artists WANE ONE and Stash, a massive collage using vintage NYC punk flyers by Scott Ewalt, and a fully functioning boombox wall commemorating ‘80s hip hop and street culture from Bayeté Ross Smith.

In partnership with FYF, the 2016 Vans House Parties offer a rare opportunity to experience some of the best live music programming out there in a truly unique and historical art setting that celebrates Vans’ rich “Off The Wall” heritage in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world.
