Happy 35th Anniversary “OFF THE WALL”!

Words via theothersideofthepillow:

“On this day, 35 years ago, a pioneering collaboration spear-headed a skateboard revolution that would change the world of action sports forever.  March 18th 1976 saw Vans release their 1st forray into official skateboarding history, in that of their signature footwear line “off the wall”.  Coined from slang utilized by Santa Monica skateboarders in reference to their “off the wall” exploits in emptied local pools, and school ground concrete banks.  The phrase has taken on greater significance in extreme sports, not to mention the significance of which it had on vans footwear history.”

Happy 45th Anniversary Vans!

We’re a few days late, but back in 1966, on March 16th, in sunny Southern California, Paul Van Doren opened the very first “factory-to-you” retail store, where he manufactured “made-to-order” canvas deck shoes, all made in-house, from beginning to end.  The Vans history is long, and rich, with it’s share of ups and downs, but this was where the vision started.  They started with the style#44, aka the Authentic, and it is still the most popular Vans style today.

“Vans joined the select few companies since 1900 producing vulcanised deck shoes for boating, was then infamously adopted by the dogtown crew who henceforth revolutionised skateboarding forever, entered the 80s ‘checkerboard era’ shortly followed by a checkered history after filing chapter 11, an ownership change, moving production to the east… before shifting seamlessly into the marketing giant they exist as as of march 16 2011. although in my heart of hearts i know sacrifices were made to the end product in moving production offshore in 1994, the brand is much bigger than that & it is this legacy & the narrative that vans shoes embody that has changed the face of youth subculture & remains timeless.”, –theothersideofthepillow blog

Vans x FittedHI x Eighty Four Skate (Available now!)

The highly anticipated release of the Vans Era from Fitted HI and Eight Four Skate was an instant hit, with lineups starting early in the night at Fitted Hawaii, but what seemed to fly under the radar, was the second location that was also offering these for sale, Blue Hawaii Surf, an affiliate of Eighty Four Skate.  There are still random sizes available on their web store for purchase, which is a plus, because Fitted didn’t even put these up on their own site for sale. Enjoy some release day pics of the Blue Hawaii Surf display.

House of Vans NYC Opening Recap

Words and info via Hypebeast,

Vans opened its new, state-of-the-art event space, the House of Vans, this past Saturday night in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood. The event played host to an evening filled with food & drink, highlighted by surprise performances by Mos Def and Public Enemy. The House of Vans is a 25,000 square foot renovated warehouse featuring an indoor concrete bowl & outdoor street course, a permanent stage for concerts and enough space to pretty much do anything the brand’s imaginations allow. John Cardiel and Tony Alva led off the music for the evening with DJ sets as artist Mike Giant began creating a custom piece on the back wall by the bowl. Gilbere Forte followed up with a rap-infused set as the crowd began to grow in anticipation of an appearance by Public Enemy. Mos Def then quietly took to the stage and quickly stole everyone’s attention in a surprise performance. The Blackouts, Atiba and Ako Jefferson, then eased everyone into the night with a reggae-infused mix.”

Damn we need to get invited to this sh*t!
