Vans Vault x Union – OG Old Skool LX (3.18.17)

unionvansig-700x560

Words via Union:

“Union Los Angeles is proud to announce the launch date for our first collaboration with our Cali neighbors, Vans.
On March 18th, we will release three colors of the Union x Vans ‘Old Skool’ collaboration; A Dusty Pink, A Muted Gold and an Off White.
The shoe’s design is simple, but the devil is in the details.  For the main body of the shoe we used a “lux” twill weave matched with a smooth, buttery suede and the Vans “stripe” is made of a smooth “lux” pebble grain leather.  Each shoe is tonal, head to toe with the exception of the inner shoe, we used a natural veg-tan leather on. As for the sole unit, we popped with a marine blue boat-shoe sole, just for shits and giggles.

We will be launching some accompanying apparel with the capsule so stay tuned for more images and further editorials leading up to the release.”

Judging by the pics, these look to be a Vault OG release.  The footbed says ORIGINALS on it.  Not sure how or why Union would fail to mention it.  I guess these are just another pair of Vans “lows” huh?  One other feature that even Union failed to mention, which stands out the most to me, is the two oversized “donut” lace eyelets.  Something you don’t see every day.

Vans Japan x BEAMS – Reverse Checker Slip-On (April 2017)

vans-beams-reverse-checkerboard-slip-on-1

Words via Hypebeast:

“Vans and Japanese retailer BEAMS recently unveiled its latest collaborative project which sees the classic checkerboard slip-on get flipped inside out. Although the overall silhouette of the shoe remains unchanged, virtually every element of the shoe’s construction is flipped. The checkboard pattern found on the shoe’s canvas upper is hidden on the inside, the back red heel branding is flipped and the outsole is reversed so that the indents usually found on the gum outsole are raised. Retailing at ¥8,500 JPY (approximately $75 USD), the Vans x BEAMS reverse checkerboard slip-on will be available through a lottery at BEAMS Harajuku location April 1.”

This is a pretty cool and original idea, and I’m really liking it.  Hopefully we don’t see too many others trying to copy this, but if they do, we know that Vans Japan thought of it first!

Vans Vault x Our Legacy – Collection (2.25.17)

our-legacy-vans-vault-1

Vault by Vans teams up with Our Legacy out of Sweden, to bring this overwhelmingly robust collection, full of very high quality pieces.  If you’re like me, and have never heard of Our Legacy, then Vans has been kind enough to interview co-owner Jockum Hallin about his brand and his style influence.  After reading the short article, I really respect his approach to what he produces.  With a focus on fabric, color choices, and dyeing techniques, and not over designing things, they’re able to let the fabrics and silhouettes do the talking.  That’s exactly what you are getting with this pack.  Vans approached them to do a small project, but they came back with a much larger idea, and after a little bit of compromise, they ended up with a mere 10 shoes, a bunch of tees, a hoodie, and a coaches jacket.  Needless to say, this is a big one.

Our Legacy holds themselves to a high standard, and it shows in the attention to details of this collection.  They chose their favorite models, the Authentic Pro LX, Old Skool Pro 92 LX, Half Cab Pro 92 LX, and a Sk8-Mid Pro 91 LX.  It’s worth noting that we haven’t seen a Pro LX model yet, so this is a cool first.  Each pair consists of a high quality army nylon, hairy suede, or a mixture of both.  The Half Cab appears to be the band leader with it’s bright orange hairy suede, but the low-key winner is the Sk8-Mid with it’s single-stitch collar, for that true vintage vibe.  That’s the one.

To really understand this pack, you just have to read the Vans interview, but enjoy the pics after the jump!

Vans x Offspring – Old Skool 36 Reissue “Pony Hair” (UTP Review) @OffspringShoes

IMG_4185

It’s been too long since I’ve done a review on any sneakers, but this will be the first one for 2017, which also just happens to be Under The Palms’ 10th Anniversary year, so how bout that?

For our first review, we’re going over this fine looking Old Skool 36 Reissue you see right here, a collaborative project with the UK’s Offspring, celebrating their 20th anniversary.  Fresh off the heels of their Clothsurgeon collab, they are back at it with a “Pony Hair” pack which also consisted of a tan colored Slip-On.  The shoe is constructed primarily in black short-grain suede, with pony hair material for the side panels.  What makes these interesting, and something I failed to notice on the original pics, is that the pony hair is checkerboard on the medial side of the shoe, while the lateral side is all black.  Perfect if you want to keep things low-key simple, yet still be about that Vans life.  You know what I’m talking about!  The waffle soles are clear, with artwork that we’ve seen in previous posts of their storefront on Neal St., and there is simple Offspring branding printed on the footbed.  These Old Skools are finished off nicely with tonal marshmallow white vulcanized soles, for a mature and semi-formal look.  All in all, I really am digging these.  I’m a sucker for tonal colored shoes where multiple contrasting materials are used, especially when they’re of higher quality, and that’s exactly what we have here.  Great job Offspring, and thanks to Aman for the assist!

These are still available in a few sizes from Offspring’s webstore.

Vans x Madness – Sk8-Hi & Sk8-Mid (2.11.17)

vans-madness-collection-10

Words via Hypebeast:

“Vans recently teamed up with Hong Kong-based streetwear label MADNESS for a footwear collection of two iconic models: the Sk8-Hi and the Sk8-Mid. The line combines MADNESS founder Shawn Yue’s fine sense of style with the Vans Classics’ styling ease, urban versatility and encouragement of creative self-expression. Both the Sk8-Hi and the Sk8-Mid feature gray and blue full-suede uppers, creating an understated two-tone effect in two colorways: a monochromatic light gray upper with a white midsole, and a black and Prussian blue upper with a black midsole. Other subtle details include the quotation “all work and no play makes you mad” printed on the midsoles, a line from the tattoo on Shawn’s hand inspired by the movie The Shining‘s famous verse “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” The proportion and detailing of the tongue gusset are specifically tailored to Shawn’s styling, which allows you to wear the pair with or without laces, whereas the Sk8-Hi features an additional zipper in the rear for easy access. The Vans x MADNESS collection will pre-launch at the MADNESS Beijing Shop and online store on February 11. A wider release will take place at select Vans stores in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Japan and Taiwan on February 18.”

Words via Offspring:
“Vans has teamed up with UK’s Offspring, to release an exclusive pack of new iterations of the iconic Old Skool & Slip On silhouettes, featuring checkerboard pony hair material.

With heat embossed checkerboard pony hair uppers and premium leather detailing, the shoes are a reflection of the long standing history Vans & Offspring have of bringing special projects to life.”

These are set to release this Friday, Feb. 3rd, exclusively at Offspring.

Vans Vault x Undercover – OG Old Skool LX & OG Era LX (2.4.17)

undercover-vans-2017-collaboration-368-02

Words via Hypebeast:

“It’s been several months since there were any updates regarding UNDERCOVER‘s collaboration with Vault by Vans. Fortunately for Jun Takahashi fans the full offering of footwear has finally been unveiled. For Spring 2017 the Japanese label has reworked both the OG Era LX and the OG Old Skool LX silhouettes, the latter of which is arguably the stand out silhouette. Arriving in two colorways of grey and bordeaux, the classic low-top boasts tonal color treatments and an all-over floral pattern, an ever-present theme in Takahashi’s past collections. The Era on the other hand features a relatively simple text-focused design along the toe box reading “Take me in time, time to the music, Take me away to the twilight zone,” which refers to the English rock band Temple’s 2014 single “Shelter Song.” This model is available in colorways of white (not pictured above), black and red. Retailing between $130 USD and $150 USD, you can purchase the UNDERCOVER x Vault by Vans collection at select accounts starting February 4”.
