Vault By Vans x Ralph Steadman – Collection (4.27.19)

https-_hypebeast.com_image_2019_04_ralph-steadman-vans-collaboration-collection-0-1

This spring, legendary artist Ralph Steadman and premium goods purveyor Vault by Vans, partner on an imperative mission to raise awareness about animal endangerment and extinction. Steadman, the renowned British illustrator of social caricatures, cartoons and picture books, lends his work to the canvases of Vans’ Sk8-Hi and Classic Slip-On, to showcase his notoriously splattered, hallucinogenic illustrations.

Featuring illustrations from “Gonzovationists” Ralph Steadman and Ceri Levy’s published books, Extinct Boids, Nextinction, and Critical Critters, Vault by Vans presents an artful and expressive way of bringing awareness and attention to threatened species. Writer-filmmaker, Ceri Levy articulates the Gonzovationist approach simply: “We’ve always maintained that you’ve got to make people laugh in order to engage them. If we just tell people, ‘you’re all dreadful bastards, you’ve screwed it all up, and now look what’s going to happen,’ people go, ‘yeah, whatever.’ But if you make them laugh, you’ve got a chance.” Thought up by the duo themselves, “Gonzovationist” defines alternative conservation through the act of gonzovating—the protection, preservation, management, or restoration of wildlife and of natural resources to include forests, earth and water.

As part of the launch of the collection, Vans has partnered with WildAid, an organization that works to reduce global consumption of wildlife products and to increase local support for conservation efforts. In addition to encouraging contributions through a donation-inspired exhibition, Vans will donate $10,000 towards WildAid to provide crucial support to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes, deliver comprehensive marine protection and reduce our collective environmental impact. “We hope these vivid depictions of the world’s most imperiled species can help inspire the change we need to save them,” said WildAid CEO Peter Knights. To celebrate the Vault by Vans x Ralph Steadman collection, Vans will feature Steadman’s artwork alongside donation installations at the new Vault by Vans Pop-Up store, located on the Lower East Side in New York City.

Coining himself as a “savage satirist”, Ralph Steadman delivers meaningful visual enlightenment and informative illustrations in this Vault by Vans collaboration using a playful approach to a sensitive cause. With his artwork reflected on beloved Vans canvases across footwear, apparel and skate decks, a merging of two explosive identities unite for a significant cause.

With every footwear, apparel and deck iteration standing for something beyond themselves, each version tells a deeper story surrounding an endangered species. The collection consists of eight footwear styles, five apparel pieces and four unique decks. Keeping environmental protection in mind, the products were designed with the most sustainable materials available including organic cotton, FSC certified wood skateboard decks and packaging made from 100% recycled content.

The Vault by Vans x Ralph Steadman collection will be available on April 27, 2019. To learn more about the Vault by Vans x Ralph Steadman collection, please visit vans.com/vault.

Introducing Under The Palms’ new mascot Billy Bulldog

Fostering a world-wide sneaker community has brought many opportunities to us here at Under The Palms.  We’ve recognized that our best asset is knowledge, bridging communities, and preserving history and culture, at least in our own world of Vans sneakers.  For our official mascot, and hopefully the first of many characters to join the UTP family, we wanted to do it right.  We wanted to share with you, one of our most influential graphic artists, who is probably the most significant artist of the 80’s, especially in the surf and skate world. We’re talking about none other than Steve Nazar, who you might recognize from the famed T&C Surf Designs tees, and more recently Thrilla Krew.  His infamous characters are iconic, and are instantly recognizable, and I’ve always loved Thrilla The Gorilla.  I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have our own character that we could call our own.  One that you could say has been accepted into Da Boys. It was tough deciding on what type of character I wanted to go with.  We needed an alpha character, just like Thrilla, large and in charge.  After thinking it over, I thought an English Bulldog’s strength, attitude and loyalty best represented us, and channels our youthful vibes, as my high school mascot was a bulldog.  When I commissioned Steve to create the type of character I wanted, I had no idea how dope it was going to look in real form, but as soon as I first laid eyes on him, I knew he was special, and Steve delivered exactly what I had envisioned.  We had our very own icon, right out of our youth, to represent and lead our lifestyle and community.  Let me remind you, I’ve been sitting on this since early 2015, before Steve re-introduced Da Boys to a new generation through his brand Thrilla Krew, just in case you have any doubts about our authenticity with this.  In fact, I originally asked if Steve could make us a Thrilla graphic for Under The Palms, and he said he had something planned in the future for Da Boys, and couldn’t let us use him, but that was the best thing that ever happened to us.  We got our very own character that we could call our own!  Oh, and while he was at it, I had him throw in our very own yin yang logo, and iconic lettering for us, so that’s also very dope!  I wanted his debut to be special and grandiose, but the more I’ve waited, the more I feel like I’ve just wasted time and talent.  Who knows what he will become, but I figured I’d just introduce him to you all, and then we will just see where he takes us!  With all that being said, we introduce to you, our own badass leader, Billy Bulldog.

Vault By Vans x Modernica – A Visit To Modernica’s Factory In Los Angeles #vansxmodernica #modernica #vaultbyvans #vansvault

VaultxModernicaPressDay 008

This past Wednesday, we were invited to a special event hosted by Modernica and Vault By Vans, where we not only got to get a first-hand look at this weekend’s upcoming highly anticipated collaboration, but we also got to learn about the company who has brought us so many great collaborations, with some of our favorite brands in the industry.  Now, you may think that I want to talk about their extensive back catalog, and name drop all the big brand names who fill up their collaborations section, because you know…for the culture.  But to be honest, I was looking through a different set of lenses that day, and really wanted to share my appreciation for all of the craftsmen who make up the majority of the company.  I’ve always been that kid who got excited when Mr. Rogers went to visit the local factory to see things being made, and to this day, if I come across How It’s Made on tv, I’m not changing the channel!  I have an understanding and appreciation for people in the skilled trades industry.  Mentorship, and the idea of working under someone with more knowledge and experience to gain a skill, is something I personally relate to in my own life, and value a lot.

VaultxModernicaPressDay 102

We got to see the actual chairs being produced, from their beginning stages of shredded fiberglass, to their very last step of assembly.  I felt bad, because we were obviously impeding on their workspace, getting in their way.  The place is loud, and I’m not sure if my high was because of simply being invited to the event, or just the fumes from the fiberglass resin filling the shop!  From there, it was on to the woodshop.  This is where the majority of the craftsmen work.  The amount of wood furniture and accessories they make, is staggering.  I love walking into a woodworking shop, and smelling the sawdust in the air.  You can’t walk out of this place without looking like Pig-Pen.  Co-owner Jay Novak, had mentioned to me while we were walking through the factory, that some of his craftsmen have been there for over 20 years, including multiple generations of family.  There’s so much going on here, it’s just so much to take in, in one day.  There’s a wood-forming machine that bends veneer sheets into those cool curved wooden furniture pieces you always wondered how they made.  There’s an upholstery shop, where all of the cushion and fabrics get attached, and there’s also a composites section where you see some other cool curvy fiberglass furniture being produced.  The archive section is also pretty neat, where you can see some of the past collabs stacked up on shelves, and also the blanks section where shells are ready to be custom ordered.  It’s definitely a beehive of activity.

VaultxModernicaPressDay 190

The product is of the highest quality, made right here in Los Angeles, CA, by carpenters and craftsmen with decades of experience.  It’s not glamorous.  It’s sometimes dirty.  It’s tiresome, but there’s this sense of accomplishment that just feeds the soul.  There’s satisfaction in working with your hands to create something from a raw material, to seeing it as a finished product in the end.  The amount of time that went into making each and every piece of the chair, tells you how much attention to detail matters to them.  Hell, just take a look at the custom box Vans had gifted us, made by Modernica, just to put a pair of shoes into!  That box is so sick!  (It’s near the end of my photo gallery).  There’s no substitute for the real thing, and in this day and age, authenticity means something.  This collection is special, and who knows if it will ever happen again.  Two SoCal brands, representing the epitome of style, with a timeless collection that we get the opportunity to own a piece of.

VaultxModernicaPressDay 285

Once again, I’m absolutely humbled by Vans for letting me be a part of these cool media events.  Special thanks to the Vans PR girls who always show me love, Michelle, Taylor, Laura, and everyone else, and also our old Blends Costa Mesa homie Brian Chor, who as Modernica’s new Art Director, came out with a banger right out the gates!  Proud of you homie!  I’m sure I get invited, mainly cause I’m local, haha!  I’m the guy that sticks out amongst the rest, because I’m not fashion forward, and I don’t really care how I dress, but I guess when I have a passion for the waffle sole, I get to bring an entirely different perspective, perhaps one that most Vans fans share.  I highly doubt any other fashion blogger who was there, is going to go on and on about the people responsible for making the product and geeking out on the manufacturing process, but maybe our following will appreciate it.

VaultxModernicaPressDay 080

Last but not least, I just want you to have a different perspective on what you’re actually paying for, when you decide to spend $500 on one of these chairs, as that’s not easy for most of us Vans collectors.  We’re not regular furniture collectors.  We’re probably trying to figure out where we’d even put this damn thing, but just know that it’s timeless.  It’s going to be cool forever.  I’m going to leave you with a little excerpt that I copied from the Modernica site:

“This chair is easily one of the most important and recognizable designs of the twentieth century.  They were originally designed in 1948, as an entry in The Museum of Modern Art’s International Design Competition, and it should be noted that Modernica is responsible for revitalizing the almost lost art of high-pressure fiberglass molding. The factory is home to the historic fiberglass presses and specialized machinery that has been used in the production of thousands of chairs for over three generation. Since 1999, Modernica has steadfastly produced the chairs as they were originally created, preserving fiberglass chair legacy and craft.  In 2000, Modernica revived this potentially lost art of high-pressure, molded fiberglass. Modernica creates each shell, by hand, one-by-one, in their Los Angeles factory—just as they had been designed, developed, and produced in Southern California in the 1950s. Modernica uses all of the original presses and specialized equipment obtained from Century Plastics. To ensure authenticity of production, the initial shell chair production was overseen by Sol Fingerhut and Irv Green, the same team employed over sixty years ago to develop the original technology. Modernica creates each chair with the charge of adhering to the original tactile qualities, texture, and characteristics that alone are unique to the fiberglass shell chair. Their historic equipment has created thousands of chairs for three generations of chair lovers — and everyday Modernica continues to produce beautiful chairs for upcoming generations.”

Vans x Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam – Exclusive Collaboration (8.3.18)

FA18_Classics_VanGogh_OldVineyard_Letters_0235

Words via Vans:

“Vans and the Van Gogh Museum proudly partner to present an artfully designed collection utilizing Van Gogh masterpieces across iconic Vans Classics and premium apparel silhouettes, available worldwide August 3. The Van Gogh Museum will dedicate a portion of its profits from this project to the preservation of Vincent van Gogh’s legacy and collection of art; keeping it accessible for future generations.

Vincent van Gogh is arguably one of the most famous and influential post-impressionist painters in the history of western art. Van Gogh is most noted for his work that evokes beauty, emotion and color bringing his personal expression to life through his art. With over 2,100 pieces of artwork produced from his decade long career, Vans worked closely with the Van Gogh Museum team to select four main bodies of work that speaks to the creative ethos of Vans’ design as well as personal moments from the artist familial history. Skull, Almond Blossom, Sunflowers and Van Gogh’s self-portrait are celebrated through an extensive Vans collection, showcasing some of Van Gogh’s most revered artwork in a new way.

“We are delighted with the Vans x Van Gogh Museum collection, as it ties in with our mission to make the life and work of Vincent van Gogh accessible to as many people as possible in order to enrich and inspire them”, said Adriaan Dönszelmann, Managing Director of the Van Gogh Museum. “By uniting Van Gogh’s iconic artworks with iconic Vans styles, our partnership brings Vincent’s art “Off The Wall” and into the world to a new audience outside the museum.”

When Van Gogh began to formally study art, he centered his focus around color theory through a series of skeletons that captured shade and light in an irreverent and dark expression. These studies have come to life across the vamps of the Classic Slip-On, long sleeve tee, hoodie and hat with Van Gogh’s human skull placed expertly across each silhouette with subtle details of the artist’s handwriting and brush strokes hidden in a reimagined checkerboard print.

More colorful renditions come from two of Van Gogh’s most recognized works, Sunflowers and Almond Blossom. Van Gogh created five large canvases that depicted sunflowers in a vase using three shades of yellow to help demonstrate the ability to create an image with varying degrees of color and texture all while using single color tones. The Sunflowers painting has been dissected to cover every panel of the Authentic and is carried through to the Sunflower Boyfriends Tee and the Sunflower Hoodie. Almond Blossom symbolizes new life and represents Van Gogh’s search for serenity, and to bring the print and its colors to life, Vans designers digitally printed Van Gogh’s painting atop a satin material to cover the Almond Blossom Bomber, hat and backpack.

The collection showcases the evolution of Van Gogh’s painting style with his self-portrait where he captures himself using bright, unblended colors and a new technique of pairing complimentary colors to create depth and intensity. Van Gogh’s self-portrait can be found wrapped atop the Authentic and a complimenting Van Gogh Oversized Tee.

The final round-up of designs includes an ode to Van Gogh’s drawing titled Old Vineyard with Peasant Woman which is delicately printed across the Old Skool and a special Classic Slip-On that features excerpts from handwritten letters from Vincent to his brother, Theo. Vans designers pulled excerpts and illustrations from some of the 700 letters that were sent to Theo and have wrapped them across the Classic Slip-On model. Both the Old Skool and Classic Slip-On models will be sold at select Vans retail and wholesale accounts.

Each model from the Vans x Van Gogh Museum collection footwear collection is finished with custom footbed art that mimics Van Gogh’s memorable brush strokes with the Van Gogh Museum and Vans logo lock-up. Each piece from the collection will also include a special hangtag that highlight historical facts behind each piece of Vincent Van Gogh’s art.

The Vans x Van Gogh Museum Collection will be available to shop at Vans.com/VanGogh, Vans retail stores and select Vans wholesale accounts. The collection will also be available at vangoghmuseumshop.com and in the museum shop at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam beginning August 3.”

Vans Bar Shot

Thompson’s 1971 novel “Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas“.  That’s not the only thing that adds to the coolness of these Sk8-Hi’s!  Although this isn’t the first time we’ve seen an alcoholic beverage brand on the side of a pair of Vans (i.e. Coors Light, Coors Extra Gold, and Pabst, to name a few), this IS the first pair of Vans created by a craft brewery, so that’s something yeah?  Oh, did we mention that there’s only 50 pairs made?  Did we also mention that Flying Dog is going to be giving them away through their social media and you’ll also have a second chance by signing up on their website?  Who doesn’t love free Vans?!  Also, according to the pics, these appear to be a Vault OG release, by way of the “ORIGINALS” heeltab.  If they are in fact LX’s, then that’s just icing on the cake for us Vans snobs!

Kadirwarriors – “CW-IV” aka Part IV: The Checker Warriors (Vans Customs)

IMG_1092

It’s been a long time since I’ve featured any custom works on here, especially of the Vans Customs program types, but when our friends, the Kadirwarriors from Singapore reached out to me, to feature a design that they came up with as a collective, then I thought I’d show a little love for them, for being such Vans fanatics, in a country that is relatively new to Vans on a more widespread scale. Even if the rare and limited Vans are mostly being imported via eBay auctions and Facebook group transactions, it’s this same passion that resonates to the masses, who might just want to step outside of their normal everyday style, and buy that first pair of Slip-Ons, Authentics, Old Skools, or Sk8-Hi’s. Any sub-culture needs it’s advocates, and these guys are a perfect example of that. Thank you all for supporting Vans like we do, and living their culture, creating your own path, while holding down Singapore for all of us Vans enthusiasts, proving Vans is truly a world-wide brand.

Here’s a brief message from Faisal (@cacal) of Singapore’s most notorious group of Vans collectors, all whom are first cousins or brothers, the Kadirwarriors.

“We present to you, the Kadirwarriors x Vans Part IV, the ‘Checker Warriors’ or shorten for ‘CW-IV’. Silos of choice, were two of our favorite models: The style 44 & 98, also known as the Slip-on and Authentic. With the Vans Customs program, our entire Kadirwarriors came up with a design that we unanimously agreed upon, which we want to share with you here.

The ‘CW-IV’ defines the Kadirwarriors and our love of Vintage Japanese Americana style, especially the vintage Vans look, with the iconic checkered foxing. We chose the checkerboard motif as it commemorates every single one of us to why we are here in the first place. The olive (Army Green) theme was added as it has been instilled in most of us, having that military vibe in our style. The ‘Warriors’ repeat pattern on the Authentic was selected to commemorate one of our favorite classic designs, the FuckingAwesome x Vans. I remember we were all looking forward to the Authentic releasing. Fun fact: Under The Palms made a repost of all the official 3 colors released worn by us in the @underthepalms IG account. We were all so stoked!

We personalized both models with embroidery stencil of our initials ‘KWAR’ on the left shoe, and the shoe name ‘CW-IV’ on the right, respectively. We finished the Slip-On with our trademark skull hand-sign logo on the panel. You wouldn’t want to know how many emails we had to send to Vans to get the logo approved for us to put on this pair. Vans has very strict protocol on pictures you want to submit. Lucky it went through, (perhaps with some referrals from some US Vans employees we befriended through IG).

As some of you guys may know, Vans.com doesn’t ship to Asia, but after 3 weeks, the shoes finally arrived, safely in Singapore. Just for fun, we have decided to assist with another 20 pairs, so if any friends want to be a part of the family and have a pair, please do contact us on our official IG @kadirwarriors or email us at kwar.official@gmail.com.

Thank you.”
